Is it Vince Young Time in Tennessee?

J. R. Steele
As we all know, life in the NFL can be a very tough thing. Teams must remain successful while managing big egos and big payrolls. The Tennessee Titans had to make a difficult decision last year when they determined that their best chance to win was to keep Kerry Collins as their starting quarterback and bench their troubled star, Vince Young. The gamble payed off with a 13-3 regular season record and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Despite losing to the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round of the playoffs, the Titans had a successful 2008 season. During the off-season, they invested in Kerry Collins as their starting quarterback for the 2009 season with lofty expectations of winning the AFC South division and making a strong playoff run. Wikipedia reports that the Titans gave Collins a $15m contract. Unfortunately, in my own humble opinion, they have yet to reap the benefits of their investment as their season has started out poorly. I, for one, think it is time to consider a change.

When teams with lofty expectations start slowly, the fans get antsy. In a small media market like Tennessee, the team needs to generate more excitement and win more games. With things going so wrong for the Titans, you have to wonder how long they will stay the current course. It may be time to finally give Vince Young a second chance at leading the team.

Although Vince Young had taken the team to the playoffs at the end of the 2007 season, he lost his starting job after suffering an injury early in the 2008 season and struggling through a bizarre off the field incident where it was reported that he was considering suicide. Wikipedia, along with listing all of his statistics and team records, simply refers to the incident as a "disappearance". After settling down and lacing up the cleats, he accepted his back-up role to Kerry Collins and vowed to prepare himself like a professional and be ready when called upon. Well... it might be time to call upon him now. What do they have to lose? They already have a lot of money invested in their 2006 1st round draft pick. They are already in last place in the AFC South? They've already seen their offense struggle with the porous offensive line and an immobile quarterback. Now might be the time to see if Vince Young is going to be a part of the future for this franchise. If not now, when?

According to the Tennessee Titans website, they have called a "Code Blue" in Nashville, TN asking the fans to come out to Sunday's prime time game versus the Colts wearing nothing but Tennessee Titans Blue. Playing in the night game has a lot of benefits, but it can also create white hot spotlight for a team headed in the wrong direction. If the Titans do not get off to a fast start against the high-powered offense of the Indianapolis Colts, all of those fans might call a "Code Red" and turn on their home team. Head Coach Jeff Fisher is not one to give in to the pressure of a rowdy crowd, but he's probably struggling with the decision himself. Does he stick with a stiff, winless Kerry Collins or does he inject some energy into his offense and give Vince Young a chance to salvage the season?

Whatever the decision, the Titans are definitely under pressure to do something. Maybe that something is to give the ball back to #10. Maybe it is Vince Young Time {AGAIN} in Tennessee. He's been waiting patiently for his second chance. But, that's just MY take on the matter!!!

I don't think Collins is the problem. However you know what ya have in him. Young deserves one more chance to show what he has.
