Is War the Answer?

Charles Ray

I stood upon a hill looking at the sky

Wondering where the stars had gone.

I watch the birds and insects fly

Through the night when soldiers die

In battles fought in forgotten lands

To lie alone beneath an unforgiving sky.

The guns are silent as we lie

Huddled in fear waiting for day to come

When then the shells will again fly

As we ask a silent God to tell us why

So many innocent must suffer

Under the umbrella of such a peaceful sky.

When the guns fall silent, and as they die

All alone on hills and in jungles

And, at last their souls will fly

Away to that land in the great beyond

And, sit peacefully watching birds and insects.

Flitting through a clear blue sky

Where, someday our souls will fly.
