Is World War III Imminent?

George Bush's speechwriter must have the easiest job in the administration. His boss hardly ever requires new material. Fighting in Iraq is keeping Al Qaeda out of the United States: the 'surge' is producing results: withdrawing US troops from Iraq anytime soon will be disastrous for both countries. These evergreens are repeated ad nauseum in every available forum. Sometimes I wonder if Bush gets as tired of making his stock speech as his listeners are of listening to it.

Bush's other favorite whipping boy is Iran. Periodic warnings of dire consequences if Iran develops nuclear weapons is the other staple, of course, but last week, he added a new twist. Like some old prophet of doom, he warned his fellow Americans that not doing 'something' about Iran soon bears the imminent threat of setting off World War III. His flawed justification for this outrageous statement was that Iran's kooky President had publicly threatened to destroy Israel - and Iran is on the brink of acquiring atomic bombs, which they will unleash on the US ( with presently non-existent ICBMs that it will magically possess). It is Washington's worst-kept secret that the Bush Administration already has plans in place for carrying out a pre-emptive military strike against Iran. I can't help wondering if the Commander-in-Chief is laying the groundwork for the attack.

In my opinion, this is scaremongering of the highest order. World War III: and the end of the world, wow! No one can top that for hyperbole. Could there be a grain of truth in it. Let us examine Bush's ostensible reasoning.

First, the threat to destroy Israel. I don't think anyone takes that seriously, least of all, Iran itself. It is typical rhetoric bombast spouted by zealots from time to time. I would place it in the same category as Osama Bin Laden's recent exhortation to all Americans to convert to Islam. Iran's leaders may be fundamentalist, but they are not suicidal. They are realists enough to realize that their country is simply no match for Israel militarily.

Let us now consider the so-called danger of imminent Armageddon. Acquiring nuclear weapons; and the capability to deliver them across the Atlantic Ocean - or even to Israel - is not like making instant coffee. It is a very long process. One simple fact will illustrate this. When I was living in Iran in the late 1970s, the Russians were building a nuclear reactor in Bushehr. Thirty years later, it is still far from completion. There is an enormous gap between running a few hundred centrifuges and amassing a stockpile of missile-deliverable nuclear bombs. Maybe Jenna Bush will have to deal with it when she becomes President, but certainly not George.

And forget about the United States, even Israel is so far ahead in nuclear technology and development, that Iran can never hope to catch up. As for those who worry about Iran supplying terrorists with a 'dirty' bomb, there are far greater chances of the bad guys acquiring it from Pakistan; which already has the bomb and more than its fair share of Al Qaeda sympathizers.

So what is George Bush up to? A charitable explanation would be that he has repeated his own rhetoric so often that the line between fantasy and reality has become blurred. Or maybe he wants to go down in history as the last great Crusader. The big consolation is that the majority of the American public tuned out Bush some time ago; and so they are content to let him live out the twilight of his Presidency with his delusions.

Ahmedinejad is a simple yet pious man. He loves his fellow Palestinion brothers. Iran will never nuk Israel even if it could,as long as Palestinian people are there in the vicinity. The brainwashing to the masses by mainstream media to demonize him, is one 'psycholoogical ' approach to make Ian look bad.

On the contrary, there is virtually 1 00% news blackout about Israel having ominous nuclear arsenal, Israel illegally ocupying Palesininan land and evicting the indigenous people, Israel killing civilians, Israel terrorising the civilians daily, imprisoning them for years without trial; the list can go on...

And I apologize if I wrongly indicted you as a "Lefty" if you are not. My sincerest apology, but when I read your article I thought I was dealing with one of the "I hate America" individuals, so I figured you were one of them. I acknowledge that to call one a Lefty when they are not is as bad as questioning one's mother's belonging to the canine family, so I was wrong, and I am dutifully chastised.

Firoze, I care not what their political leanings are. but insanity is insanity, regardless of how the insane individual votes. Ahmedinejad has said HOW MANY TIMES that Israel and the US must be destroyed? And while Iran's military cannot defeat Israel, one atomic weapon can go a long way toward that end. And as Ahmedinejad hopes for the Muslim Armageddon, thus the end of the world, can you not see that his goal is DESTRUCTION of EVERYTHING, Iran included? Have you missed that salient point?

Jim...first you equate Ahmedinejad with Hitler and the you accuse me of endoersing their views (I don't), becuase you presume I am a Leftie (I'm not). I find this truly ironical because Hitler and Ahmedinejad were as far right-wing conservative as you can get.

Jim...you're presuming that Iran has the capability to 'Nuke Israel' or to detonate an atom bomb over US troops in Iraq. You are also presuming that the Iranians are too dumb not to realise the consequences of such suicidal actions. Ahmedenijad does not represent the entire Iranian population. The Iranians haven't survived for 5000 years by being stupid.

"First, the threat to destroy Israel. I don't think anyone takes that seriously, least of all, Iran itself." Yeah, and despite Hitler's Mein Kampf declaration of solving the Jewish "issue," no one believed him either. If one cannot see the incredible number of parallels between the West today and Europe in the 1930's they are sight impaired. And what if Iran's president decides to use the weapons against our troops in Iraq? Is that okay with you? Or just nuke Israel? Do you Lefties believe we should just let the Jews swing again? Pacifism is cancer, and I'm afraid without Conservative backbone, a Leftist would surely die of the disease.

...such as India feeling they should align themselves with China in a battle to destroy the USA, due to the USA gov's imperialist ways. Hopefully the US survives his Presidency, without WW 3 and or a Civil War or revolution on US soil.

By violating the UN Charter, GWB (and the Congress that voted with him) and starting a war of aggression in Iraq, GWB inspired wrath towards the USA, globally. Most know that the USA is the largest importer of oil with little of value to export, other than tobacco and corn; and that, when Iraq was switching to the Euro, it was going to seriously damage the USA in World Trade economy. This did indeed make the threat of WW 3 a very real possiblity as counries started thinking...

And not far from Iran, people like Neil Bush (and I read, Bill Clinton) are getting richer building up Dubai to become the latest place the wealthy "in crowd" vacations. Much of the labor to build the luxury Palm Islands and "tallest tower in the world" comes from importing labor from the war torn countries who are without jobs (except being forced to choose which military organization to join, once the USA started bombing Iraq and destroying the people's businesses and way to keep roof's over their heads.)Many do not get paid for their labor and end up returning to their homeland as poor as when they went to Dubai.
