Is Yankee Stadium a Red Sox Fan?

David Ortiz Jersey Found at Construction Site of New Yankees' Stadium

Well, the New York Yankees aren't only going to have to handle local fans that root for the Boston Red Sox, but they have to deal with their new stadium too. The stadium was found to have a David Ortiz Jersey. That jersey was discovered during construction of the new Yankees Stadium in New York. It appears that one of the construction workers was a Red Sox fan, and as a prank put it in the cement of the new stadium.

That cement was cracked and the David Ortiz jersey will no longer be part of the Yankees stadium though after it was removed. The construction worker was only working on site for a single day, but he brought the David Ortiz jersey with him that day to "pay his respects" to the Yankees.

Sports fans go through all kinds of routines to bring bad luck to their opponents, and good luck to their own teams. Some of the more common ones include wearing a rally cap, and a peculiar way for wearing your pajamas. Rally caps aren't nearly as daring as putting a jersey in the construction of an opposing team's stadium, they just involve wearing your baseball hat backwards hoping for your team to come from behind to win. Many fans do that, but a less common occurance is the wearing of pajamas inside out. Some fans are so superstitious that they will do this before a big game for their favorite team.

Other superstitions include one that was made popular in the movie "Bull Durham" where it was revealed that you shouldn't have sex the night before a game, if you were playing in it. Others referenced in various sports movies include the policy of not changing your underwear or socks when your team is on a winning streak, having a special meal, or worshiping a plastic figure as seen in the movie "Major League".

As a fan I usually don't go as far as the items listed above. My superstitions are very simple in comparison. Many times if my team is on a winning streak and I haven't watched any of those games on television, I refuse to watch a game on television until they lose, thinking if I watch it will "jinx" my team.

Of course I also follow the same policy if I watched those games, I believe if I fail to watch a game on television the winning streak might end and it is my fault. Other shorter term superstitions I participate in are holding my breath, closing my eyes, or wearing my baseball glove during a game if I think these actions have helped my team to succeed in the past.

I have never gone to the extreme of putting a jersey of my team at a construction site of another team, but then again these are the things that make sports so much fun. If I had the opportunity to do something like the construction fan did with the David Ortiz Jersey at the Yankees Stadium construction site, would I? Of course!

  • Superstitions are part of all sports, especially baseball.
  • There are superstitions involving animals too, just ask the Cubs fans about the goat.
  • wearing your pajamas inside out might also cause it to snow, which wouldn't be good baseball luck.
