ISP Review of PeoplePC

ISP review of PeoplePC

A few years ago when I first started using the internet I home phone and cable service. I didn't really have the money to get broadband internet access at the time, so I started checking out different options. PeoplePC was highly advertised around this time.

One day while checking the mail I received a CD for PeoplePC and started reading what they offered. At the time PeoplePC had a monthly fee of $9.95 and claimed to be better then other dial up services. AOL was around $24.95 at this time and there were a few others that were more expensive. Cable broadband was starting at $39.29 from my cable provider - which I knew would likely go up pretty fast like my cable bill seemed to be doing without much difference in my service. Based on cost PeoplePC seemed to be the best way to go.

One of the first things PeoplePC said to do on that CD I received was to check to see if there was a service number for my area. I entered my phone number and received a number of local area code service numbers for PeoplePC - five total just within my local calling area (without long distance charges). For the heck of it I checked out a few of the other dial up providers and found they had even less (AOL had five in my area but three of them were long distance to use; Netscape had only two in my area). PeoplePC was looking better at this time for both cost and area code service numbers.

I still wanted more information so I checked out the CD content without downloading anything. It seemed safe enough (I'm picky about what I download onto my computer LOL). So I downloaded the CD and signed up with PeoplePC. Even then I wasn't 100% sure I was making the right choice. After downloading the CD contents and completing the signup information I was ready to start Surfing.

I've had a number of friends that had used dial-up service over the years and they all told me to be prepared to be disconnected from time to time. They also told me that dial up speed was slow so don't try to rush.

PeoplePC was slow when compared to broadband but not as slow as AOL or other services that my friends were using. I didn't get disconnected at all for the first two months I used their software. This according to my IT friend was rare. He told me that if I went that long without getting disconnected its likely due to lack of PeoplePC subscribers within my area. Either way I was growing more content with my service.

Finally the day came when I started having problems. I really wasn't sure what the problem was but I knew I was going to have to call the 800 number on the CD. I called PeoplePC and waited on the phone about ten minutes (the time of this call was around 11:30am). After that first ten minutes a live operator answered and was very friendly and didn't rush to get off the phone with me. She took care of the problem within a matter of a few minutes and even listened to a few of my corny jokes I had been remembering from my emails.

PeoplePC proved time and time again they care about the customer - at least to this customer. I used PeoplePC for about a year total and never felt rushed on either of the three service help calls I made (mostly over stupid things I misunderstood on how to correct). My disconnection times were few and far in-between. I loved PeoplePC and will likely go back to them if and when I no longer can afford broadband. I would highly recommend PeoplePC to anyone.

Most people that know me know that I am called Bird by my friends online. It comes from my nickname that I have used online for most of the last 10 years - flyingbird65. I have used that nickname in Pogo.com...  View profile

Well first of all! I did have alot of issues with my win-xp pro computer! using att.net and was never a Primary act. user on the net! But now I am the Primary acct. user and had issues with peoplepc ISP, but the problems were with my computer? Not with (Peoplepc.com)! So I had to Re-install my O.S and install all my Files/programs and do all required update's and now My computer is very fast now and do not have any issues or problems using peoplepc.com! I fact I like it better than att.net, but do miss their Message Board! So before you do anything with picking a I.S.P? Check everything on your computer by a computer/tech or ones self if you know how to. Any I really like Peoplepc.com and it does what I want to do! So this is my reply on this, and I hope this sheds-light for other users.

I was thinking about using PeoplePC for my next choice, I will have to see how my current choice does before I switch.

Bird, I can tell you that I will NEVER go back to dial-up again. I think it would be faster going to the library, and getting stuck in traffic on the way there to get the info you are looking for. Lucky for me the price of broadband isn't that expensive here.

    Is PeoplePC better then DSL?

  • Donna Porter12/26/2006

Good article, I wondered about the company myself, though praying I'll never see dialup again. Luckily where I live DSL is not much more (article pending). I like what you had to say about the customer service. Though I have heard bad things about Earthlink -- hopefully people will get the best of both, as you said. Nice job.

note from the bird: While typing this I failed to notice that PeoplePC and Earthlink have now joined forces. This will likely make both even better.
