The first decision to make is who you want to spend your life with. This is probably the biggest issue and hardest to answer. Love can be blind and you may not always be looking at the situation objectively. This is a common reason for divorce. There are questions you need to ask yourself and be able to answer honestly. Can you handle the bad in this person, as well as the good? Are you ready for this commitment? Are both parties mature enough to handle the responsibility? Where do each of you see yourself in ten years? There are many others, but it is important to be able to be honest when weighing the good and bad.
The next topic is deciding where you both want to be in life. You need to decide where you both want to be with your careers. Some will want to be finished with college and obtain a career. While others will want to pursue a career without college. The big issue here is money. A college graduate will statistically earn much more over their lifetime then a non graduate. This topic is a very serious one and needs to be agreed upon before a serious commitment takes place.
The next topic is family. Whether we like it or not we enter into a new family when we become committed to another person. This is a determining factor because it will give insight into both people's priorities. Some differences may be perfectly fine, but other's will not. Over all, any difference can be overcome. However, both people need to work together to do this. The question is how well do you work together?
After you have decided you are compatible for marriage there are still more things to be discussed. Children is the biggest obstacle. You need to come to an agreement on when to have children and how many you plan to have. There can be compromise on this issue, but keep in mind the consequences of and stress of having a child when both people are not ready. Take precaution with this issue because it can and will change your plans. Parenting needs discussed also. What type of parents will you be? What is important to you? Parenting differences can also cause problems in many relationships.
In closing, most marriages can work. However, no relationship is perfect and it is important to prioritize the different issues in a relationship. It is important to give and receive equally in a relationship and treat one another with respect.
