"It is Finished!"

Daniel  Zimmermannski

O My God! O My Father! Why!
Why dost Thou not hear Thy beloved Son?
O My God! Day and night I cry;
I, who dwell with Thee, with Thy bosom one!

O My God! I am but a worm!
Form and comeliness have forsaken Me!
All My bones, stricken and infirm,
Leave their wonted joints, wracked with misery!

Here am I, desolate, forlorn!
Men reproach and jeer; yet I trust in Thee!
From the horns of the unicorn,
From the deadly foe Thou hast rescued Me!

For behold! I have reached the goal!
Finished is the work that Thou gavest Me!
Now to Thee I commend My soul;
With the spoils of war I return to Thee.

Note: This poem is based on Psalm 22. This psalm prophetically expresses the feelings of Jesus as He suffered and died for the sins of the world. Note that the psalm begins with the words: "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" Jesus spoke these very same words on the cross.
