It Waits

Will it Come for You?

V.S. Lee
It waits. Biding its time and choosing its next victim, it waits. The victim must be exactly what it wants. It can see into the hearts of all who pass, and they do not know or believe that it exists. What is it? There are none alive who can tell. So few even suspect.

Will she be the one? She is lovely, but she is strong and healthy. One wonders what is in the minds and hearts of those whom they pass in the street. Through the day and night, it watches and waits. It can get what information it needs and be patient. It will know when she will be alone, unguarded and off-guard. Then it will attack. Another missing woman that will soon be forgotten by all but her family.

Perhaps it will be the young man who passes with his arrogance showing in the way he walks in his expensive suit. It might enjoy taking such a person. One who appears to think the world belongs to him, and everyone else is just a stepping stone to his own success. Fear coming from him would taste sweet to those that feed on it.

The child, maybe. They believe so much more easily than adults. The fear will be instantaneous and sweet, but it will be short-lived. It might be better for the creature if it waits until it is nearly sated before taking a child. The creature almost does not want to harm a child, but it is hungry. So hungry.

Well, now. What have we here? A group of toughs who are harassing a young woman as she tries to ignore them. Yes, they are the ones. How to herd them without bothering her? The creature does have some kind of a conscience, now that such prey is before it. It stirs. It follows.

All it takes is a little misdirection. They see what they want to see. The toughs leave the woman alone and follow what they think is a little old man into the alley who is well-to-do. Money can buy pleasures, and this little old man seems to have it. They follow him.

Madness. Fear. Ambrosia. The creature is sated. There will be no need to hunt again, tonight. It waits.
