IT was ALL a DREAM (another Hip-hop Devotional)

AJ WOODSON
It was all a dream, I used to read Word-Up! Magazine
Salt-N-Pepa and Heavy D in the limousine

My pastor, Dr. George D. Crenshaw often says in his sermons that when God gives you a vision, he will give you the provisions to carry it out. When we are young we dream about being a lot of things when we grow up. These days many have dreams of being a hip-hop superstar, an actor or an athlete.

Before I go further let me just say everyone can't be a rapper, a DJ, a producer, an actor or an athlete. Sometimes the best thing you can do for hip-hop or the entertainment or sports business is going to school and becoming a lawyer, an accountant, a business manager, or one of the many not a glamorous professions behind the scenes.

Our celebrities need brothers and sisters to handle their business as well. So you can still be in the business but on the business side. That being said it all starts with a dream.

I was a fiend before I became a teen,
I melted microphones instead of cones of ice cream.
Music- orientated, so when hip-hop was originated.
Fitted like pieces of puzzle complicated.
Cause I use to grab the mic and try to say "Yes Y'all"
They tried to take it back and say that I'm too small
-Rakim (Microphone Fiend)

If this is what you want to do, don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. You are too small, too slow, too whatever, if you truly want to be that, know that all things are possible through Christ. Now what you don't see on the music videos in the magazines interviews and in the movies is all the work it took for that person to become what they are.

No matter what it is you want to do, give it your all, learn every aspect of it and pray. Prayer is as important as perfecting your craft.

If God has given you that vision, putting Him first and lots of hard work can make it happen.

The problem is we don't get what we want, when we want. My pastor also often says, 'Delayed doesn't mean Denied, but sometimes just Deferred." God answers all prayers, but he moves on His timetable not ours.

A lot of times the things we want to become and do in life require a lot or preparation. God has to prepare you to be able to handle what comes with that. And when we get what we want the most important to God is to praise His name and give Him the glory.

We forget how we got there, who helped us get there and as sure are God helped you get there, not making time for him and giving Him the praise, He will take it away from us. This is something I can testify to first hand.

So continue to dream, put God first and pray and it can be achieved. A teacher of mine used to say almost daily, "If you can see it, you can achieve it."

"Hold fast to your dreams, for without them life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly."- Langston Hughes

    Very unique style you have.
I know many will be blessed by it.
It is refreshing to see something like this on AC

I agree with you Shamontiel 100% inexperienced representation sometimes means the difference in a successful career and being another dope artists who stays under the radar and never really gets the success they deserve. I spend alot of time trying to mentor and educate alot of young artits who look to me as a big homie... Langston Hughes is one of my favorite writers as well and everyone knows how I feel about Rakim as an emcee, he is also a really cool dude whenyou get to know him. I also agree and was having a similar conversation just this afternoon about Jay Z and his buisness ethics!

I got ready to comment and my eyes zeroed in on Langston Hughes. Love him! Rakim, too, for that matter. I was rapping the "It was all a dream" from the very first line. As far as folks' dreams, I just really want us to be more informed about the business end. From an entertainment journalist, it bugs me to no end to see an artist with a TERRIBLE PR rep or manager. I've seen interviews absolutely ruined and reputations flawed because of having some random friend on your business team who doesn't know what he/she is doing. I certainly support artists who want to know as much about business as they do music. This is why I've been a longtime fan of Jay-Z. He could always dip in at both ends.
