It was Ballroom Greats Night On

Charlotte Kuchinsky
Continuing with theme nights, "Dancing with the Stars" paid tribute to ballroom greats this week. To celebrate they brought in some of the world's best dancers and ballroom instructors. The most decorated Latin ballroom dancer of all time and 16 time champion - - Donnie Burns - - served as a member of the judging panel.

This was also the first week in which contestants had to perform two dances. The first was a group routine. The second was each team's individual dance. The stars that finished in first place last week had the privilege of choosing their team members.

Romeo chose Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff as well Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas. Hines Ward went with Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Kendra Wilkinson and Louie van Amstel.

Romeo's team came out first, guns blaring with a hard core cha cha that was well synchronized and clean. I liked it. The judges did too.

Head judge, Len Goodman, said it was a challenge to keep six people synchronized and while they weren't perfect, he thought they had done a good job. Judge Bruno Tonioli said the group came out full throttle, which was good. However, he thought they lost some synchronization from time to time because of their aggresssiveness. Carrie Ann Inaba disagreed. She said the team was well matched. Guest judge, Donnie Burns, agreed with Carrie Ann. He said the team was great.

In response, the team received two 7's and two 8's for a total of 30 out of a possible 40 points. Those 30 points would be added to each individual teams' score for the night.

Team two seemed determined to score higher with a rousing cha cha that had loss of bounce and shake. It was energetic and fun.

Bruno said their passes were good and that the dance was seamless and smooth. Carrie Ann commented on a slight misstep by leader Hines Ward. Donnie said the spacing between the teams was off a bit, which was a big no no in team dance. Len said Kendra she was like a martini -- shaken -- which stirred him. He told Kirstie she was right on beat.

Unfortunately, the second team fared no better than the first, scoring two 7's and two 8's for a total score of 30. Their team score would also be added to individual scores to determine each team's standing for the night.

Up first for a single dance was Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas. They tackled the paso doble. It was unusual and appeared clean and crisp. However, I thought it lacked real fire.

Len said the dance confused him. He told Chelsea she channeled too much aggression so that it lost all refinement. Bruno called it the Quentin Tarantino paso; violent and intense. Carrie Ann said that she liked that it pushed the boundaries. Donnie agreed with Len. He said the dance confused him.

The team received two 8's and two 9's. That gave them a score of 34 out of 40 for the dance and a total score of 64 out of 80 for the evening.

Up next were Kendra Wilkinson and Louie van Amstel with a tango. I found it too jerky and not smooth or refined.

Bruno told Kendra she never looked more beautiful or elegant but that she needed to work on her frame and carriage because she depended too much on Louie to hold her up. Carrie Ann said she was proud of Kendra. Donnie said the dance content was difficult and that Kendra coped with it well. Len agreed that the choreography was difficult. However, he felt the dance could have been crisper.

The couple received three 8's and one 7 for a total of 31 out of 40. When added with their team scores, that gave them a 61 out of 80.

Kirstie Alley and Maks Chemerkovskiy went for fun with an energetic jive. I thought it was cute but I also noted that Kirstie had problems with her kicks and flicks.

Carrie Ann said the duo was always entertaining but that they got a bit out of sync. Donnie said he liked it and that he bought it. He noted that real talent was seen in the moments of transition within the dance and that Kirstie had that down cold. Len said the dance had fun, energy and playful. Bruno called it superb entertainment.

The couple received inconsistent scores. Donnie delivered a 9. Bruno went with an 8. Carrie Ann stuck with her usual 7 for the team and Len only gave them a 6. The total added up to 30, giving them a score of 60 out of 80 for the night.

Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff delivered a fun and entertaining quick step aimed at putting the star back on top of the leader board. It was delightful!

Donnie called Ralph his hero for the way he handled his partner's fall the previous week. He also said that the star had well articulated feet and that the couple "rocked." Len said the dance had energy, good footwork and was crisp and clean. Bruno called it vibrant and vivid. Carrie Ann said Ralph was back and she was proud of him. She also said she loved how he danced with such passion and joy.

The team pulled a 10 from dance great Burns as well as two 9's and one 8 for a total of 36 out of 40. That gave them a 66 out of a possible 80 points.

Hines Ward and Kym Johnson also went for the fiery tango. I thought it was entertaining and fun to watch. I love the way Ward dances. He is graceful and charming.

Len said the dance was a mixture of tiger and fairy, which confused him. Bruno called Hines big and masterful like a panther. Carrie Ann said she loved the way Ward commanded the dance and his partner. Donnie said Hines danced from the heart and had charisma.

The couple mirrored Ralph and Karina's scores with one 10, two 9's and an 8 for a total of 36. That also gave them a 66 out 80 for the evening.

Up last were Romeo and Chelsie (Hightower) with a fun samba. It was cute but lacked something.

Bruno said that Romeo's bounce was all wrong because he didn't bend his knees. Carrie Ann agreed but said the rapper still had potential. Donnie said that Romeo had grown greatly throughout the competition and that he admired that. Len said he didn't care for the dance.

The couple received two 8's and two 7's for a total of 30. That tied them with Kirstie and Maks for last place with a total of 60 out of 80 points.

Here is the current standing:

Ralph and Karina = 66

Hines and Kym = 66

Chelsea and Mark = 64

Kendra and Louie = 61

Kirstie and Maks = 60

Romeo and Chelsie = 60

So who is going home this week? That's anybody's quess. It could be time for one of those unexpected and undeserved slip-ups that sometimes happen. That could mean that Disney princess, Chelsea Kane, could get booted for all the wrong reasons. Let's just hope that curse is broken.

I think Kirstie's fans may save her one final time but, if she doesn't step up her game next week, all bets will be off. On the other hand, they might have had enough already with her less than successful jive.

I'm not a Kendra fan but this isn't her week to go home if we're talking fairness. It should be Romeo's time to go based on dancing alone. Sadly, dancing doesn't always have something to do with the votes. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

It seems the judges always favor the worse dancers just because they have no dancing talent Kristie was bad from day one and they give her an 8? And the best was tossed off.
