It was a Dark and Stormy Night- a Short Story

k. ferguson
It was a dark and stormy night. The rain pounded on the roof as the candlelight danced across the walls. She couldn't believe it had been two months since her last visit with her laptop, writing the stories that made her life. She knew it was time to get back in the saddle again, but as the storm raged on, she worried about the battery life in her laptop. So much had happened in those two months she was absent from the writing world, but now, she had her story. It had been slowly coming to a full boil in her mind and tonight was the night to let it all out. The little ones were tucked warmly in bed and the husband distracted by video games... it was time to write again. Thankful that she had charged the Nintendo DS earlier that day, she heard her husband mutter under his breath as the time ran out on his Brain Age challenge. She snickered to herself that he would never beat her high score as he walked by... the glow from the little screen lighting his way to the bathroom. She shook her head and decided it was time to get to work. She was so excited to get this story out of her head. She had tried for months to take notes every chance she could, but with the holidays and all the excitement surrounding them, it was almost impossible to take any notes. Now, it was time.

She sat at the kitchen table, listening to the storm rage on. It seemed to be getting worse. She suddenly had a chill and insisted to herself that a nice warm cup of hot cocoa would make this special event even more glorious. She got up from the table and filled her teapot on the stove. Thank goodness for gas burners she thought to herself. Her husband walked by, still absorbed in his game. He glanced into the kitchen and muttered, just loud enough for her to hear, "You should really get your story written or you will regret it". She just smiled at him as she got her big mug ready for the warm water.

She once again sat at the table, warm hot cocoa in hand, ready to get her story out. Excitement ran through her veins as she felt the cocoa warm her tummy. Then she froze. She couldn't believe it was happening. NO! Not now!! No... stop! This isn't fair! How could you do this to me! She watched the 'low battery' blink on her laptop and she scrambled to get her fingers on the keys. As she did this she noticed her lap was suddenly warm. NO! She had to ignore the spilled cocoa... she had to get her story out of her head. Pen and paper was not an option... she needed her laptop. As her candle burned down to it's last nub of wax... the power faded and her screen went black as she got out her one and only sentence... "It was a dark and stormy night..."
