Italy: a World Cup Power with Four Titles

Italy Won the World Cup in 1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006

Italy has a chance to tie Brazil for the most titles in World Cup history if they repeat as champions in 2010. Italy won the World Cup in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006. According to ESPN soccernet Italy was the runner up in 1970 and 1994, they finished third in 1990 and fourth in 1978. The four championships make Italy one of the top teams in World Cup soccer history. Here is a recap of Italy's four championships.

1934

In the first round Italy routed the United States 7-1. In the quarter-finals Italy tied Spain 1-1. In a rematch the next day Italy won 1-0 to advance to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals Italy beat Austria 1-0. Italy was the home team and they defeated Czechoslovakia 2-1 to win the first World Cup played in Europe. Angelo Schiavio who scored four goals and Raimundo Orsi who scored three goals lead Italy to victory.

1938

The World Cup moved to France in 1938. In the first round Italy defeated Norway 2-1. Italy defeated the host French team 3-1 in the quarter-finals. Italy defeated Brazil 2-1 in the semi-finals. Italy won the World Cup with a 4-2 win over Hungary. Silvio Piola lead Italy with five goals during the tournament.

1982

Forty four years would pass before Italy won their next World Cup. In 1982 the World Cup moved to Spain. Italy was in group one. Italy tied Poland 0-0, tied Peru 1-1, and tied Cameroon 1-1. Italy did not get a win but they advance to the next round. In the second round Italy was in group three. Italy defeated Argentina 2-1 and Brazil 3-2 to advance. In the semi-finals Italy won a rematch with Poland 2-0. Italy won the championship over Germany 3-1. Paolo Rossi led Italy scoring 6 goals in the tournament.

2006

Italy waited 24 years before they won their next World Cup in Germany. Italy was in group E. Italy opened up the tournament with a 2-0 win over Ghana. Next Italy tied USA 1-1. Italy wrapped up group play with a 2-0 win over the Czech Republic. In the round of 16 Italy shut out Australia 1-0 and in the quarter-final Italy cruised past the Ukraine 3-0. In the semi-finals Italy defeated the host Germans 2-0. Italy won the finals over France on penalty shots after the game ended at 1-1 tie. Zinedine Zidane led Italy with three goals in the tournament.
