Items that a Freelance Writer Mama Needs

Laurie Tam
Being a freelance writer mama is hard work especially if you have little ones while trying to work. You have to work around everyone else's schedule in order yours to work but sometimes things don't work out the way you wanted to for the day. In this article, I am going to list some required stuff that is needed for sure as a writer from home. When you are getting started in the field, they are important to have and here is the list.

1. Books= I am a total book freak. Get some that pertain to writing such as a book called "Writer Mama" written by Christina Katz which I did an article on here listing that as one of the books and it was the first one I got that has to do with writing. I do agree that getting either journalism , communication or English degree would help but anyone can become a writer. Even a mama can. I do not have any of those degrees with me but I take the time to learn about writing and I write everyday. It's how I learn and so can you.

2. PC/Laptop= I have a laptop which I love since it is portable and if there is no Internet connection at whatever places I go, I can use this to write down articles as long as I bring along my battery charger for my laptop. I love the idea of having a desktop but laptop works for me for now. Get one that would work for you too.

3. Internet connection such as Wi-Fi, cable or broadband= I don't know what I would do without any Internet connection. I wouldn't make any money without it. It's for sure. It's how I make most of my income at home and if you take your laptop to a place with Wi-Fi, you are in luck to get on the Internet with it.

4. MS Office Software whether on Mac or IBM= I prefer IBM way more than Mac. I never like Mac to tell you the truth. I have always love using PC. MS Office have the Word program where you need to start writing on it before posting it on to places online that pays writers or use that program to send your writing work to your client by attaching to your email to them. It is a necessity to have this program. If you currently don't have it, I suggest you go and get it.

5. Folders/Filing Cabinet/Carrying Case= If you can, get all three of them. Not only will it save you time for paperwork later on but it will be easier to retrieve. If you can't get all three for the time being, get the folders and a portable box to hold your paperworks. Carrying case is necessary if you have to show the samples in person.

6. Printer/Fax/Phone= The phone part is the most important thing to have since your clients want to contact you when necessary. I borrow my hon's printer to print some paperworks out and the fax machine. Some clients may prefer you to receive stuff being faxed to you. But most do the email route to send and receive work. I only have my cell phone and it's the only way for any of my clients to contact me. If you do go out more than being at home, having one may be worth it compare to having a home phone but if you want to save more money, the better option is to have a home phone line. You can always call them when you get home.

I had fun writing down these items that are necessary to have. I currently do not have my own home office so I have my own portable paperwork filing system down. I do appreciate the time you take to read this and if you are not currently a writer mama, I suggest you get started on writing right now instead of tomorrow.
