Once you have a cage that you think the hamster cannot break out of you will need to purchase bedding. You can purchase bedding from Farm N Fleet which is about 2 feet wide by 4 feet long. This bedding will cost you around $5 and it will last you about 4 months. You will want to put about four inches of bedding in the cage because hamsters love to pile up their bedding to sleep in it. As you can see, bedding is not very expensive so you wont have to worry about using too much.
You will then need a water bottle and a food dish as well. You can purchase a water bottle that suction cups to glass. Usually some cages will come with built in water bottles that you can use. You will want to check for a food dish as well. You will then need to purchase a wheel for the hamster to run on. You need to remove the bedding from around the wheel so that the hamster can actually move the wheel. If you don't hear the hamster using his wheel, make sure that he or she didn't move the bedding.
If you want to potty train your hamster you can do so. They make little potty houses that your hamster will go to the bathroom in. It's pretty amazing that it takes you a long time to potty a child while you can place a container in the hamsters cage and it will be potty trained instantly. Make sure that you don't place the cage near any windows or draft areas where the hamster could catch a cold and get sick. If you are sick, put the hamster somewhere else so that it doesn't get sick as well. Once a hamster gets sick, it's hard to keep it alive.
