It's 2009 Apple Cup Game Time in Washington State
Washington Vs. Washington State Has the State's Attention on Saturday
The 2009 Apple Cup is between the University of Washington and Washington State University, and will spell out which team walks away with a lot to say for the next year. The reason that the game is only about the bragging rights now, is that both teams have been eliminated from post-season bowl projections, and it will be the last game of value for either team until the 2010 college football season gets started. It looked like this could be a really good year for the Huskies early on when they were able to pull an upset against USC, but several bad losses really set the team back and sent them towards the bottom of the Pac-10 standings.
Currently sitting at the bottom of the Pac-10 standings are the Washington State Cougars, who are at 0-8 in conference play so far this season. It has been a rough season for the Cougars with a lot of injuries really taking their toll on the team. They are 1-10 overall, with their only win of the 2009 season coming in an overtime game earlier in the season out-of-conference. Now the Cougars will be looking to put a nice exclamation mark on the end of their season, and possibly pick up a win in what will be their most important game of the season. The University of Washington is currently 3-8 overall, and would like nothing more than to give their fans a good showing and finish the 2009 season on a positive note.
This is the 102nd Apple Cup between UW and WSU, and now this season's game is more important than ever to all of the college kids taking the field. If one of these teams can walk away with a win on Saturday afternoon, it could possibly lead to many fans forgetting about the rest of the season and end up with a nice sense of balance for the 2009 campaign. It is definitely a frustrating year for both of these teams, but all will be forgiven by their fans if they are able to take down a cross-state rival during a broadcast seen across the entire state of Washington.
