The race is open to both teams and individuals. They anticipate over 35,000 participants this year. The event begins at 7am with registration and packet pickup, with opening ceremonies and survivors group photo to follow and then an aerobic warm up. The events begin at 9am, and include a 5K Competitive Run/Walk, a 5K participant Run/Walk, and a 1 mile family walk, so that anyone can participate. Other attractions include a Health Fair expo, Kids for the Cure, and merchandise tents. The closing ceremonies are at 11am.
75% of the net proceeds from the race are kept in Central Indiana to fund screenings and follow-up care for under-served women. As well as educating about breast health and early detection. It is also used to fund outreach programs geared directly toward breast cancer. The other 25% helps fund the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Program, helping to fight for a cure by advancing research.
Local businesses are asked to show their support for the Race by decorating their store fronts and windows pink. There is even a contest running with it called "Paint the town Pink!" Businesses wishing to participate in the contest are asked to register no later than March 31, 2007. Participating businesses will receive recognition on race day, and the winning business will likely be featured on television during race week. Judges will include local TV personalities and Jeff Saturday from the Indianapolis Colts, along with his wide Karen.
The Susan G Komen Foundation has developed and educational initiative called I AM THE CURE.™. It will play a big part in this years race. Its initiative is to educate and empower people to take charge of their own breast health. It is meant to be emotional, memorable, and motivational. It aspires to press the importance of early detection, in hopes that people will take the message home with them and put the information to use.
There are also many volunteer opportunities available for those who wish to help out the cause. And donations are always welcome, especially in the form of a tribute to the memory of a loved one, to help with their mission.
If you are looking for a worthwhile activity, this is definitely one to check out.
