It's Easy Being "Green" - Do More Than Just Recycling

Tim
Everyone knows that being "green" is crucial to maintaining a healthy environment, however a great majority of people still do little more than recycling as their contribution. Although every little bit helps, many people have pre-conceived ideas that being "green" will interfere on their life. These myths are the main reason people do not strive to improve their world. The truth is there are many ways to make a great impact on keeping our planet healthy that take little to no effort.

Just as with any new adjustment to your life, making change takes an adjustment period. Forming eco-friendly behaviors can take time too however it can be over a period of weeks or months. A simple way to do this is reduce the amount you drive in a week. Instead of completely cutting driving out of your life, you can make a difference by reducing your overall consumption of non-renewable fossil fuels in the long run. Carpooling is a great way of accomplishing this task it also reduces stress, accidents and traffic, insurance, tickets, parking, and even vehicle maintenance. Reducing your time driving is not a difficult task, it is merely an adjustment.

Another common myth is that Earth friendly products are hard to find and expensive. The truth to this however is that the sustainable product industry is estimated to be worth $230 billion dollars nationally, supplying approximately 13,000 retailers across the country. Because many of the eco-friendly products are made from recycled or reclaimed materials, they are often priced less than their conventional counterparts. An easy way to identify lower-impact products is by searching for words such as "recycled" or "organic" while shopping at the grocery store. Even if the green product is more expensive, seeking out energy-efficient and used products can bring down your total average of expenditures.

Some people believe that the frugality of greener living deprives them and their family of comforts of life and earned conveniences. The truth of the matter is that there are earth-friendly options for designer home furniture, state of the art appliances, luxury cars, fine foods, and even exotic vacations. For the people who feel that supporting the environment requires time for volunteering and signing petitions need to realize that there are a broad range of organizations that make it easy to access information and send letters to decision makers over the internet. The only effort being green takes is brainstorming ways to substitute eco-friendly practices into your life.

Without a doubt, being green is a very simple practice. Once the general public can comprehend the truths about maintaining an eco-friendly environment, our planet will rapidly become a better place. Without even having to make any sacrifices, you can do your part to keep our oceans blue, our skies clear, and our grasses green.
