Danny Gokey was the first contestant to learn that he will be going on tour this summer. Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai were also told to pack their bags and get ready to hit the road. Next, Allison Ireheta and Michael were asked to stand. Allison was told she was in the bottom three. And, just when he probably thought he was safe, Michael was asked to join her in the bottom three.
After several commercial breaks and a performance by Brad Paisley of his new single Then, Scott, Megan, Matt and Kris found out that they were safe. Finally, it came down to Alexis Grace and Adam Lambert. Alexis got the bad news that she rounded out the bottom three. As Idol fans know, one person from the bottom three is told they are safe. Allison got the good news tonight leaving Alexis and Michael in the bottom two and they had to wait to hear their fate until after Randy Travis and Carrie Underwood's debut performance of their new duet I Told You So.
With Alexis and Michael at center stage, Ryan reminded the audience and the judges of the new save rule this year. The save rule gives the judges the opportunity to save a contestant that will be voted off because they think America may have gotten it wrong. There is only one save for the entire season. Simon commented that the judges discussed it and were considering using it tonight. Michael was told he was safe and Simon told Alexis, "You are the one we were thinking about using it on."
Alexis was given one last chance to perform Jolene for the judges so they could make their final decision. After her performance Simon told her it was a unanimous decision not to save her. So, tonight marked the end of the American Idol road for Alexis Grace. Next week's show will be on Wednesday night at 8:00 PM EST due to the Presidential News Conference on Tuesday.
