It's Fun to Try and Understand the English Sub-Language

PAUL JENSEN
Lets call it a sub-form of the English language. Words and phrases are created by speakers of the language to fit a descriptive feeling or meaning for a specific event. To understand the English language one must understand word creations, what feelings they represent and when is an appropriate time for their use. One basic rule. You must make sure the listener understands what the speaker is trying to imply.

For example, for each of following, try and define what the speaker means when using the folllowing:

As the crow flies-
Thunder clap-
A real soaker-
Settiing sun-
Ring around the rosey-
Dirty old man-
Forked tongue-
Bucket of bolts-
Go fly a kite-
Close but no cigar-
Sit tight-
Birds of a feather fly togeather-
You cracked my up-
Indian giver-

Without the ability to allow us to use word creativity, English would be dry and boring. If used at the fight time and place word creavity can shed a light on what we're trying to say, trying to feel, trying to make the listener understand.
