Methamphetamine is neuro toxic with chronic abuse leading to psychotic behavior.

If you have come to this blog you or someone you know may have a substance abuse problem.

What makes someone after all the negative media attention take "ice", crystal meth?

Well firstly, the common thread with all drug users is that they initially believed that they were mentally strong enough to think that they can "dabble and try" the drug without becoming dependent. Most users of drugs believe that their "conscience" watching over them will know when its become a problem. Ice is a drug that your "conscience" sitting on your shoulder, also parties with you, and as such, is as altered in its reasoning as your mind when under the influence of methamphetamines.

The numbers are staggering:

In 2005, nearly 6.2% of high school seniors reported using methamphetamine at least once.

The number of 12-17 year olds admitted to treatment for meth addiction more than doubled between 1994 and 2004.

In North Dakota, an estimated 60% of the male prison population are meth users. 80- 90% of the female prison population were incarcerated for meth related offenses.

Chronic methamphetamine drug abuse can lead to psychotic behavior including intense paranoia, visual and auditory hallucinations and violent aggressive episodes. Other noticeable effects are confusion, tremors and convulsions causing death. Long-term use of methamphetamine may result in anxiety, insomnia, and addiction.

Studies have shown methamphetamine to be neuro toxic, damaging brain cells that contain both dopamine and the neurotransmitter, serotonin. Prolonged drug use of methamphetamine reduces the brains dopamine levels increasing the risks of the motor disorder disease called 'Parkinson's disease'.

The increase in both heart rate and blood pressure, associated with meths drug use, can cause irreversible blood vessel damage in the brain, resulting in strokes. Other effects of methamphetamine drug use include respiratory problems, irregular heartbeat, and extreme anorexia. Its use can result in cardiovascular collapse and death.
