It's NOT ALOT

A Grammatical Poem

L. Lee Scott
It's not ALOT, but always A LOT,
A lot of folks make this error. Not one word, it's NOT!

There are three words whose meanings, I fear, have leaked:
Pique, peek, peak -- which one do you seek?
The man looking into your window: He peeks!
Ed Hilary on Mt. Everest: the peak!
Are you interested in the story? Your attention is piqued!
Remember them, please, or your readers will squeak!

Is this a secret kept between we?
Of course not, it's between you and me!
If you'd say you and I, say we --
But if we follow "between," or "for," or "in," it's - us. (And no, that doesn't rhyme! we must?)

If you add him, then it's not between,
With you, and me, and him, it's among!
Just you and me, it hides between,
With them and us, among a throng!

So much to err, it's human, it is,
but one more line I ask:
The possessive of "it" is always "its"
"It is" is "it's" -- you pass!

To say your command of the English language is divine would leave no word to suitably describe your use of it.

Thanks L. This is helpful. I've had the "a lot" thing down for years, the possesive its gets me every time, even though I know better! I'm shakey on the who / whom thing...Maybe you could squeeze that into a sequel to this cool poem!
