As the start of a new month begins, we are all faced with at least a single looming question: How are those New Year's Resolutions coming along?
Now, I realize that some of you may cringe when you have to think about those resolutions that you have yet to get started on. The fortunate fact of the matter is, though, it's not too late!
One thing I've learned about resolutions is that they oftentimes fall by the wayside because although the drive may be there, there is a lack of planning. As with any good idea, without the careful "How-To" instructions that go along with it, that's all you've ultimately got - a good idea.
I believe that New Year's resolutions are a little deeper than resolving something in the moment and hype of the New Year. I view mine as important goals that I want to accomplish in the coming year, things that I may have missed the bar on in the previous year.
Below are four suggestions to once and for all get your New Year's Resolutions off the ground with no judgment and no questions asked:
1. Make a List
If you've already done this, you're good to go. Still, it's good to take a minute to re-examine your list and know why it is you have chosen those things to focus on for the year. This will help you in the next part of the Resolution Process.
If you don't yet have a list, sit down in a quiet place and take a few minutes to really think about what it is you want to accomplish this year. If you have trouble coming up with things, try thinking outside of the box.
Have you always wanted to learn German, but never found the time? Add it to your list! Has underwater basket weaving been a secret passion of yours for awhile? Why not enroll in some classes?
Look at your list and look inside yourself to see why you chose the resolutions you did. Maybe you chose goals that will better the lives of your family members. Maybe your resolutions will help you be more sucessful at work. Maybe you chose them for personal satisfaction. By knowing what those resolutions mean to you will help you push on when it's hard and see the light at the end of the tunnel: success!
Whatever your dreams and ideas are, no matter how outlandish they may seem - now is the time to pursue them with a fire you may not have known existed. Creating something tangible that you can see will help you feed that fire and do what you may not have been able to do before.
2. Create a Plan
Just like building a house or any other solid structure, having some sort of blueprint is essential for making a dream a reality.
Take your list and print it out if you've typed it. Beside each goal, list in as much detail as possible what you plan on doing to see these goals come to pass.
Be practical. If losing weight is on your list, don't just write that you want to eat more sensibly - write what types of foods you plan on eating also. If you don't immediately know, put some sort of symbol down to remind yourself that you need to do research first and that you will come back and finish that part of the planning.
The point here is to be able to see what exactly you're going to do and how you're going to get there. This, in essence, is your blueprint.
3. Find some support
Trying to undergo anything as important as what you're trying to accomplish can be a daunting and overwhelming task. Add to that the daily ups and downs of life, and you could have a real struggle on your hands.
It is inevitable that the "stuff" of life will happen, despite your efforts at bettering yourself or those around you. In fact, this "stuff" will most likely seem to happen even more than normal when you really get to work on what you want to do.
This is why it's so important to find support in friends, family, co-workers, or anyone else you know who will help keep you focused and on track even if you don't feel like it.
4. Stick to it
This is the final and hardest part of the Resolution Process. Why? Because it's the one that requires the most work. With this part, you will have to be focused, committed, and disciplined enough to see your goals to completion, which is not always an easy thing to swallow.
It's not a secret that the excitement of the New Year does not remain new throughout the entire year, thus making it harder to keep the same momentum you discovered at the beginning going all the way to the bitter end.
But push through it anyway.
Put your goals up somewhere (or in multiple places) where you will see them every day to remind you of the coveted end result.
If your goal is to read more, tape that goal up on your TV set so that you'll see it every time you sit down to watch your favorite show. You will then have to consciously decide to not work on achieving your goal or not.
It's important to know that whether you've started out strong or haven't started at all to really take ownership of your New Year's Resolutions. Put priority on them but not be too hard on yourself if you slip up along the way - there's always the next day to get it right.
Good luck!
