It was fun to listen about them reminisce about the old days and how much fun teenagers had back in the 50s and 60's showing off their most prized possessions, their girlfriends and their cars, or maybe it was just the cars.
Last July I decided to take my husband up to Detroit for him to check out first hand what Cruising is all about.
Him and I actually met while Cruising in our hometown of Lapeer, Michigan. As teenagers we lapped the small city several times over and over, on the same street and turning around in the same spots, the post office and the gas station. The fun part was glancing over at who was in the car next to you and flirting aimlessly to see if they return the favor or keep on driving. I nabbed him down at the gas station and well 17 years later the rest is history.
My father in law has a 72 Corvette Stingray that he keeps under a cover in his shop, I called him and he ok'd it for us kids to take it out on the town, he had no idea we were driving the old beast 50 miles north to Detroit, what he didn't know didn't hurt him. My husband spent a few hours detailing it out and making the old girl shine a bit. I doubt that Vette had that much attention in years. Then off we went.
The whole process starts around 8PM EST, on the famed Woodward Avenue Just south of 8 mile Road within Oakland County, Michigan. Many of the cars are already out strutting their stuff. Typically the cars you will see here are older models from the 50s through the 70's The most popular car I would have to say I saw there was the Ford Mustang.
The windows are rolled down and the music is flowing out of everyone's windows. This is the one and only time in Detroit that you feel comfortable enough to stare into the car next to you.
The busiest cruising dates take place on the third Saturday in August when Woodward Avenue hosts the annual Woodward Dream Cruise Car Festival. Over 40,000 cars and collector vehicles are on show and nearly 2 million people are there to display and claim bragging rights to their very own classic machinery. This is one of the largest single day events in the nation.
If you are looking to venture back to the Good Ol days of cruising around your small town strip or just want to take your honey out for a night of cruising the town, grab your digs and head out to the coolest strip this side of the border.

Post a CommentI grew up in central IL and it's amazing how teens can just circle downtown again and again and again...
this brings back so many memories of cruising. it's too bad so many people have turned it into something bad and so many places like where i live are banning it. those were some gooooood times.
I remember crusing Woodward. Oh my! LOL
I found one of many old bottles of ambush in my drawer (I guess they are collectable now.) and it reminded me of cruising in the late 60's.
I used to cruise way back in the 1970's.
