It's Spring Again

Ben Lingenfelter
To look at the gardens others grow,
It seems not hard to do;
The gardener an evening goes out to sow
It looks almost pleasant; he whistles the while.
Then the flowers bloom row after row,
The veggies drop plump and ripe -
Even the veggies are a picture show.

But when I go out to fight the land
My soil's rocky and hard
I burn red blisters into my hands
While I prepare the clay.
I bleed into that dirty strand.
The plants that do grow clump together
Fighting weeds in a bunched up band.
They die.

So I plant pumpkins now.
Pumpkins everywhere.
They're strong and cheerful, like me.
