It's Time to Change Brands Again!

Rising Prices and Shrinking Quantities Force Me to Switch Again

Allana Calhoun
My family is picky. When it comes to toilet paper they like soft, thicker 2-ply sheets that aren't too thick for the plumbing. The happy medium between my family's pickiness and the ever frustrating situation of shrinking sheet quantities turned out to be Charmin Ultra Soft.

For a while, Charmin Ultra Soft's double rolls were giving us 400 sheets per roll. I felt it was worth paying a little extra for the name brand in order to get the sheet quantity and the softness my family was happy with.

Then today I hesitated at the hefty price tag for the 36 roll package. Don't know what made me hesitate today of all days. Perhaps it is because of Sparkle brand's recent betrayal, but hesitate I did.

The jumbo packages in the store today were "Big Rolls" which were supposed to be twice as many sheets as normal rolls. Looking at the sheet quantity however, I saw that it was down to 200 sheets per roll. I'm quite certain my shoulders sagged with a heavy sigh of disappointment.

In a hurry, I settled on a 36 roll package of Quilted Northern which boasted their "Softest Sheets ever" and offered me 286 sheets per roll, all for a dollar less than the Charmin. Some quick mathematics will show you that I left the store today with a package of toilet paper containing over 3000 sheets more than the Charmin brand, plus I saved a dollar!

Not sure, but I think Northern has 2 ply thickness. Michelle Starkey, here on AC, is writing a coffee company about shrinking cans. BTW thanks for letting me know about the typo - it was hilarious once you pointed it out, lol.
