COMMENTARY | Finally. The announcement of the cancellation of the reality television show "Kate Plus 8" may have been a disappointment to some, but to me it couldn't have come soon enough. Frankly, I couldn't care less whether or not Kate Gosselin is dating again or if she's had plastic surgery. Enough!
I understand the fascination of the family when the show started back in 2007. Mothers especially were baffled by how Gosselin and her husband could take care of so many children. It's hard enough to take care of two or three, let alone eight. We like to watch someone else handle the situation and sometimes judge ourselves on whether we would do a better or worse job.
In the beginning, the family seemed blissfully happy, with the kids making breakfast for mom in bed on Mother's Day along with the trials and tribulations of the kids' first dental appointments. The show quickly turned into one that was more dramatic and chaotic than anything else. It soon became apparent that the show was just a good way for the family to be able to afford such a large brood.
The more we watched Kate, the worse she seemed to get, but the episodes just kept coming. Did people really want to continue to watch this family whine and bicker? Most of us get enough of that within our own dysfunctional families.
If the Gosselins hadn't had their reality show, where would they be now? Would Kate and Jon have gotten divorced? If so, raising eight kids as a single mom in a challenging economy, to put it mildly, would have been nearly impossible. In any case, I realize, as many people probably do, I just don't care.
The woman can take all eight kids to Discovery Cove at Sea World in Orlando. How many people can afford to bring one or two? It's not cheap. They've made a killing off the public's fascination with the family's life, and probably won't have to worry about money anytime in the near future.
What will Kate do next? Do you think Kate will be featured on "The Bachelorette?" Now that might be entertaining. I just can't picture a man who is willing to take on Gosselin and her eight kids.
Just because TLC has canceled "Kate Plus 8" doesn't mean you won't be able to see them on television again. If you're one of the few who will miss it, TLC has promised it will air specials of the family in the future so we can keep up with how the family is doing. Oh boy; I can't wait.
