My girlfriend is an excellent dancer and was even on a dance team in college. I on the other hand have two left feet. This means that I'm always sitting in the corner while she's off doing the samba or cha-cha with someone else. And the other night when I tried to dance with her I ended up bumping into a table and spilling a drink on a rather large fellow.

So for the sake of our safety, she dragged me to dances classes at the Mark Morris Dance Group on Lafayette Avenue.

I was scared to embarrass myself, but the MMDG prides itself on taking on all levels of dancers, even those that shouldn't walk, let alone dance (myself).

The MMDG has been in business since 1980 and has a great selection of faculty at the dance school. I was a little overwhelmed at the number of different dance classes they offer (from Afro-Caribbean "Dance & Movement" to Zumba and everything in between).

I eyed a 18th Century Dance Class hoping it would be a lot of standing around, but alas it wasn't available. So we settled on a West African Dance class which was perfect for me. My limbs were flailing to the beat and I didn't even have to keep a decent rhythm. It was perfect for me and I have already signed up for the next one! My girlfriend can be sure that I won't embarrass her when I bust out my new moves the next time we are out at the club.

Definitely head over to the Mark Morris Dance Group for a class. You won't be disappointed!
