I've Seen The Future And It's Not Pretty!

A few nights ago we watched a really silly movie, Idiocracy. It got me thinking though, so maybe it wasn't that lame!

If you haven't seen it, it's about a very average army guy, predictably named Joe (played by Luke Wilson), who gets chosen along with a woman, for a cryogenic experiment. Due to unforeseen circumstances they are not retrieved after a year and their coffin-like cases end up on a garbage heap, until some 500 years later, when a trash avalance reveals them again.

During those 500 years smart people had postponed having children so often for career, social and philosophical reasons that in most cases they just didn't have them. The lower spectrum of society, both intellectually and socially, had bred enthusiastically and uninhibitedly from a young age. After 500 years everybody on the planet was terminally stupid, lazy and addicted to TV.

It is discovered that Joe is now the smartest person on the planet and he hasto save the economy and end the food shortage caused by the fact that nothing wants to grow in the earth anymore. He finds out that crops are being irrigated with an energy drink. Apparently the marketing department of the corporation that makes this drink has managed to convince the world that water was bad and should be replaced with their product, because "it has electrolytes"! Water is only used in toilets!

How silly is that? Actually, the whole concept is not so far-fetched!

Man has become so full of himself in the last century that everything that is natural must be tampered with and "improved". This is all for economic gain, not for the benefit of the consumer. But we're lapping it up, because of advertising!

Take our water... Already chlorine and fluoride are added to municipal water. Chlorine has been found to contribute to arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), asthma attacks, nausea and disorientation. It also destroys Vitamin E, which is a powerful anti-oxidant and helps in the prevention of cancer. If fluoride really prevented tooth decay, there would be a marked decrease in dental problems in the developed world, but this is simply not the case. Fluoride has been found to damage brain and nerve cells, is harmful to reproductive organs, affects the thyroid gland, damages the liver and weakens the bones. Which is why all water for consumption should be filtered. And for heaven's sake, if you want grandchildren, don't give your children fluoride tablets every day!

Just about all food packaging claim that the product is "enriched" in some way. How crazy is that? They take the whole food, like wheat, take out all the nutritional value by refining the product and then add in some synthetic nutrients and a whole lot of other chemical nasties and sell the finished product to you at a pretty penny!

Millions of people are urinating away billions of dollars worth of synthetic vitamins every day. We've been sold on the idea that we need supplements. Never mind the fact that we retain only about 8% of what we consume. What we need is food in its original state. Eat the raw fruit and vegetables. They have all the vitamins, minerals, enzymes, flavenoids and things that haven't even been discovered yet that your body needs in the correct proportions and synergies.

It is ironic that, notwithstanding all the advances in medicine, humans are sicker today than ever before. Sixty years ago, old people suffered from cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Today we have children with these diseases that are caused by lifestyle. Not only the lifestyle (specifically food and activity), but the lifestyle we lived when we conceived and carried those children in our bellies. We are heading for a tragedy, and it's not going to take us 500 years to get there!

I'm always irritated by the War On Cancer. We don't need to go to war against cancer. We don't need to spend billions of dollars to find a cure for cancer. Cancer is so easily prevented. We should be spending that money on educating people about living healthy, giving them the true information, not what the industry groups and the media want you to hear. And you know what the neat thing about that would be? The lifestyle that protect us from cancer also protects against all other degenerative diseases like heart disease and diabetes, and even some auto-immune diseases. We can be free of stroke, digestive disorders, allergies, migraines, cope better with stress, improve our fertility, have beautiful skin and eliminate obesity!

I can't change the world, or the politics. But I can speak to individuals and inspire them to get the facts for themselves and to stop believing in advertising. Read books by Michael Pollan, John Robbins, Mary-Ann Shearer and the many others who have paved the way for us. Read The China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell. It is the most comprehensive study ever conducted about the link between diet and health.

One by one, we can turn our lives around and teach our children a better way.
