In vitro fertilization is usually done with other procedures as well. One of the main processes that it is done in conjunction with IVF is something called ovulation induction. Many times when a woman is not able to get pregnant and in vitro fertilization is able to help, there is generally a problem with ovulation. Ovulation inducing is done through drugs that cause a woman to ovulate more than one egg at a time. The more eggs the better chances are for embryos to be formed.
It can take as many as three times before in vitro fertilization is successful. Considering every person or couple is different, means that every case will be different. There are some people that have more than one cause of infertility and they will have a harder time of achieving a successful pregnancy. For all couples that have more than one cause of infertility, IVF is generally their best option for being able to have a baby.
The best candidates for in vitro fertilization include people that have these type of fertility issues: tubal problems, low sperm count, endometriosis, ovulation problems, tumors in the uterus, abnormal uterus shape, and unexplained infertility. Tubal problems could include blocked fallopian tubes, or damaged tubes. This makes it almost impossible for the woman's egg to be fertilized or for the embryo to travel to the uterus. Low sperm count or problems with the mobility of the sperm can cause the inability for the sperm to reach the egg, which results in no fertilization. Endometriosis, which can be very severe, can affect both the ability of the egg to be fertilized and the ability of the embryo to be transferred to the uterus. If a woman has a ovulation issues then the egg is not released to be fertilized.
If any of the above issues are present then the chances of a successful pregnancy is very low. The good news is that in vitro fertilization is available to people that want a baby but are not able to have one due to fertility issues. In vitro fertilization is not an easy process on the people involved, but all of them feel that is worth it in order to have the baby they want.
