Jack Bauer Episode 5 Recap

Daniel Rein
On Monday January 22, 2007 the fifth episode of 24 aired on Fox to the American public. The episode was found to be dull to most of the loyal 24 fans because of the lack of action. The first four episodes kicked off with a bang with plenty of explosions, killings and a nuclear bomb going off. The fifth episode of 24 seemed to lack all of that. No one died or was shot. In fact the only explosion that took place was when Jack Bauer rescued a man who was trapped in a helicopter that had landed on a rooftop. Once Jack Bauer rescued the man, the helicopter crashed to the ground, causing a huge explosion.

This episode of 24 focused more on Jack Bauer's personal life as viewers were astonished to find out that Jack Bauer had a brother and a father who was still alive. Not only that, but it appears that both of Jack Bauer's family members have ties to terrorism. Jack Bauer's brother was seen by viewers in last season's episodes of 24 as Jack's brother was behind the assassination of President David Palmer and the terrorist attacks of President Logan. Jack's brother had ulterior motives which were to secure the oil supply in the Middle East and to do anything possible to secure that goal.

The viewers also learned that Jack has not spoken to his father and brother in many years and is not on good terms with them. The name of Jack Bauer's father came up in connection with a Russian army general named Dresnik who is believed to be supplying the terrorist Faed with the nuclear bombs.

The threat level is still very high as there are four nuclear bombs left in the city. Faed was able to escape the blast and is now in search of an engineer who can make the next four nuclear bombs active. According to CTU director Bill Buchanon, the blast attack could have killed many more people had the attack been moved to a central location with a dense population. Fatalities resulting from the nuclear bomb are at a minimum 12,000 people. Jack Bauer who had told CTU that he was no longer no longer on active duty, has said that he is back in the field after witnessing this horrific attack.

Meanwhile back at President Wayne Palmer's cabinet, he has moved to the bunker and has conveyed the joint military chiefs for military action. The generals want to declare war on countries that may have a role in sponsoring the terrorist actions. The president's aides are also clamoring for internment camps for Muslim people.

In another series of events, the FBI has been working with Mrs. Palmer's friend as he has been able to get close to a bunch of terrorists. He is working with the FBI and has a cover story that he too is a terrorist. As he is wearing a wire, the FBI hopes he can get more information towards stopping the terrorists.

Towards the end of the episode, Jack Bauer is interrogating his brother using his usual tactics of fear and pain to get the answers and results that he needs. The president makes a speech to the American public about having courage as the show fades into the background.
