Jackal from the Bush, Lightning the Lion and the Great Stampede

A Political Fable and Allegory

Christian K. Martinez
The savannah was a good place, large and filled with much life. It was a good place for many to live, though not so good for some. One day the jackal that lived amongst the bushed, raised his head as he saw a great heard of antelope...they seemed almost to be leaving the savannah. He did not want this; he fed off the great herd. They made him fat, and happy. He decided that he must find a way to keep them here, but what to do...what to do...

Suddenly Jackal was hit with inspiration, he raced from his bush home, and began nipping and nipping and nipping at the heels of all the Antelope. He turned the simple herd into a great stampede of Antelope. And they rushed towards the people and the animals on the Savannah. All the people and the animals of the savannah stood shocked and watched the stampede come towards them and then a lion, a lion by the name of Lightning raced forward to drive them off...some of the Antelope he killed, some of them he wounded and slowed...but he could not stop them all.

After this as Lightning limped back to his pride a small hyena came to him, cackling and coughing for many creatures had been harmed by the Antelope Stampede, even though the Antelope would stay here now, many were hurt and harmed. The hyena came to lion and asked him...angrily "Why didn't you stop the herd? You should have done a better job...look how many of us are hurt now!!!!!"

Lightning turned to regard him. "Why didn't you help me too? I was there...where were you?" With this Lightning turned away. Jackal slunk off, and received no angry words from any hyena, nor any other animal of the plains.
