Jackass 3D Trailer Pushes Envelope in New Dimension

Robert Dougherty
The first Jackass 3D trailer premiered on TV last night. However, the Jackass 3D trailer was not in the intended format, since Jackass 3D premiered its trailer in two dimensions. The infamous, death-defying crew has already pushed the envelope of stunts and good taste. Now they seek to push the envelope in another dimension, and redefine a gimmick that is already starting to get backlash. So, although the Jackass 3D trailer offered more of the usual crazy stunts, it probably loses some impact in 2-D.

Ever since 3-D technology made it big last year, the crazed stuntmen of Jackass have been determined to take advantage. Since this is the third film in their movie franchise, it is the best time to make a 3-D film, and make a pun about it in this title. So, after Step Up 3D and Piranha 3D come out this summer, the Jackass franchise will enter three dimensions in its third film as well.

The Jackass 3D trailer came out in 2-D, premiering on several Viacom channels - including MTV during a Jersey Shore commercial break. The stunts include a port-o-potty being launched, a unique form of duck hunting, a gorilla, a tree being cut down with someone in it, and a giant hand.

The premiere of the Jackass 3D trailer came after more extended footage premiered in 3-D at Comic Con. The crowd reportedly ate it up, especially in the format the film was intended. But when the movie comes out Oct. 15, the 3-D format may be even more tired to many people.

If 2009 was a giant leap forward for the technology, 2010 has largely been a big step back. Critics and audiences are getting more and more tired of this craze, especially because of movies converted to 3-D at the last minute.

But picturing the Jackass 3D trailer in 3-D may still be enough to excite fans. Unlike films such as Clash of the Titans and The Last Airbender, this was always meant to be in the third dimension. For fans of the franchise, picturing the stunts in 3-D is still an exciting prospect.

With the buzz around the Jackass 3D trailer, it brings the controversial pranksters back into the spotlight. Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O and company last hit the big screen in 2006, so it has been a while since they performed stunts too dangerous for fans to imitate. Using 3-D for their big comeback has made them buzz-worthy again - and could do the same for the format itself.

It is certain that the most disturbing stunts were left out of the Jackass 3D trailer. But the movie will premiere uncensored, and then some, on Oct. 15.
