Johnny Knoxville was suppose to be doing some special appearances leading up to you Summerslam but with the Chris Benoit tragedy he decided to distance himself from the WWE for the time being until all of the steroid and Benoit stuff goes away. Nobody will blame them for backing out though; I'm sure nobody on the outside wants to get involved with the WWE or wrestling for that matter with what just happen with Benoit and Steroid Usage. The way it was suppose to go down was the jackass crew was suppose to make a few television appearances and a PPV appearance as a whole group, then it got switch to just Summerslam itself, then the whole idea was just scratched. When Johnny Knoxville decided to pull out the rest of the Jackass crew decided to pull out as well such as, Steve-o, Bam Margera, Chris Pontius and Ryan Dunn. Steve-o and Chris Pontius were still a go for the show even after Knoxville pulled out, but WWE felt that without Knoxville it wouldn't be as a big hit as it could been with him. As it stands now WWE will have a very hard time getting another celebrity for quite some time, which is only a ploy for more PPV Sales and higher ratings.
Personally I feel them not doing this angle is for the better, we've seen these type of celebrity gimmick matches through out the years, and they usually come off horrible. In the past we've seen celebrities such as, Jay Leno and Lawrence Taylor. The Jackass guys do crazy things and stunts that do involve hurting themselves, but they are not wrestlers and would more than likely make a very noticeable mistake during the match, that wouldn't go over very well with wrestling fans and might draw out stadium boo's. Jackass people stick to beating your own selves up on your own time.
