Jackie Evancho Performs on PBS

A Performance Well Beyond Her Years

Sandy James

Performing well beyond her years, eleven-year old Jackie Evancho can be seen on "Great Performances" this month. "Great Performances" is a PBS program that highlights exceptional talent and Jackie Evancho is the youngest talent to grace their stage.

Singing her way into our hearts last year on "America's Got Talent", she continues to mesmerize viewers and listeners with her operatic arias and exceptional vocals. Jackie has all the innocence of an eleven-year old and the finesse of a gifted singer as she performs on stage wearing a beautiful soft white dress with satin trim and a satin bow. Jackie herself looks like a dream as she performs many songs from her new CD release, "Dream With Me".

Accompanying her on piano, producer and sixteen-time Grammy winner, David Foster joins her on stage for each performance. Foster produced and arranged the orchestra for "Dream With Me".

The one-hour PBS performance takes place at the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida which was the home of John and Mable Ringling. The museum is the biggest circus museum in the world and has many artifacts from the Ringling Brothers. John and Mable Ringling also collected many artworks from around the world and they are also on display at the museum. Parts of the museum are toured with Jackie Evancho and David Foster during the PBS program and it's mentioned that when the Ringlings were at home, they had many dinner parties and often invited opera singers to perform for their guests.

Jackie Evancho is still unbelievable to watch as she performs on stage. As she sings, "All I Ask Of You" from Phantom Of The Opera, we are reminded that she began singing just three years ago after seeing this movie and this is her favorite tune from that movie.

Her first performance will captivate and chill you at the same time as she sings, "When You Wish Upon A Star". The song comes from Walt Disney's "Pinocchio" and won a Grammy in 1940 with original artist Cliff Edwards singing it as Jiminy Cricket. It is currently the theme song of The Walt Disney Company.

Jackie gives an astounding performance of Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" . A song that can only be sung from the heart, Jackie will bring tears to your eyes on this one and a smile to Sarah McLachlan.

"Nessun Dorma" is a well-known aria that is usually sung by a male tenor and not by a soprano. Jackie's soprano rendition of this song brings a whole new outlook and appreciation to the song. Her soft vocals do this song justice that you'll wonder why we haven't heard a woman soprano sing this before.

Check your local listings for the PBS broadcast of Jackie Evancho on "Great Performances" as it will be airing nationwide during the month of June. After you've watched this very gifted eleven-year old sing, you'll probably do what I did: Run out and buy the CD "Dream With Me".
