Jacksonville Jaguars 2010 NFL Draft Day One Analysis
The Jaguars Make the Surprise Pick of Tyson Alualo
About Tyson Alualo
Tyson Alualo is a 6'3 295lb senior defensive tackle out of California. Scout.com considers Tyson to be a four star NFL prospect, the 75th best prospect in the 2010 NFL Draft, and the 8th best defensive tackle in the draft.
Tyson Alualo Strengths
1) According to NFLDraftScout.com 's Rob Rang, "Alualu is scheme-versatile and a high-effort player."
2) Rang also states Alualo is "viewed as one of the safer players in the draft."
3) Rick Gosselin, of the The Dallas Morning News, states, "NFL scouts rave about Alualu's motor - he is relentless, both on the field and off."
4) CBS Sports Frank Cooney states Tyson, "has a combination of quickness, awareness and endless energy that wears down blockers."
Tyson Alualo's Weaknesses
1) Fox Sports Czar states Alualo "needs to get stronger."
2) Rob Rang mentions Tyson "lacks the athletic upside of some of the other defensive linemen of this class."
3) Cooney states Alualo "doesn't have elite strength or speed."
Why the Pick Was a Surprise
1) Scout.com had Tyson Alualo rated as the 75th best prospect, yet Jacksonville picks him with the 10th overall pick.
2) Scout.com had Tyson Alualo rated as the 8th best defensive tackle in the 2010 NFL draft, and only two of those were selected before Tyson.
3) The Jaguars needed a solid pick with the 10th pick as they do not have a second round pick.
4) CBS Sports had Tyson projected "anywhere from late in the second round to early in the fourth."
Analysis
Hopefully, the Jacksonville Jaguars scouts, GM, and people responsible for their draft picks know something I don't know about Tyson Alualo. The expectations on Tyson Alualo have grown as he suddenly and surprisingly became a top 10 pick in the NFL.
Jacksonville needed someone who could contribute and help this ball club with the number 10 pick. Tyson has some positives and potentially could help the Jaguars. However, so could the players ranked higher than Tyson. The Jaguars also needed a player to produce excitement and draw in more fans. Alualo is not that player. The Jaguars are now left with a third round pick (74th overall), a fourth, two fifth round picks and two sixth round picks. The Jaguars could have had Tyson Alualo lower in the draft. Certainly, the Jaguars could have traded down in the draft and still have selected Tyson. They could have picked Tyosn lower in the first round and the pick would still have been a surprise. However, Jacksonville would have received another player, another draft pick and a better opportunity to improve the ball club. On the positive side Jacksonville did get a player with a strong work ethic and a good reputation. The pressure will be on Coach Jack Del Rio to improve the Jaguars with Tyson Alualo.
