Jadeveon Clowney Chooses College Destination

Ryan Christopher DeVault
Jadeveon Clowney has chosen his college, finally deciding between Alabama, Clemson, and South Carolina. Now Jadeveon Clowney, the No. 1 college recruit in the country, just has to make that announcement official. Unfortunately we still have to wait a few more days, as Clowney will be giving his declaration on Monday. You can now make your jokes about how this will be a great Valentine's Day gift for the university that he chooses, because he is definitely about to make one of these schools much better.

Clowney is an exceptional defensive end from South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Originally it looked like he was going straight to South Carolina to play for Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks, but USA Today is reporting that things might have changed. It appears that a late charge from the Clemson Tigers has put this decision up in the air, meaning the school might be able to steal him away from South Carolina. Alabama had really wanted Clowney on their roster, but apparently they are fading when compared to the other two schools.

Clowney didn't make his announcement on National Signing Day, because he apparently hadn't made his final decision. Even if he had decided, by drawing out the announcement, he has basically reserved Feb. 14 for all of the attention to be placed upon him. For a high school star just making the jump to college that might seem like overkill, but it is never too early to get on to the radar of NFL scouts around the country. Instead of being lumped in with all of the other players that have already declared, now Clowney will be out there all by himself during Monday's announcement. It will certainly also draw the attention of everyone at South Carolina and Clemson for the day.

ESPN is one of the scouting sites that have rated Clowney as the best high school prospect heading into college this year. He stands 6'6" at 240 pounds, and he supposedly has a lot of room to pack on the bulk that will come with training on a college level. They have also stated that he has a nice wingspan and he is tough to contain when rushing the ball due to his quickness and pursuing ability. In 2010 he recorded 162 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 29.5 sacks, 11 forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, and scored five touchdowns on defense. That is about as impressive as the stats can get on defense, and one college is about to retain his services.

What a terrible name. I wasn't given the greatest name, either, so I know from whence I speak, and I commiserate, but come on, that's cruel... He had to become good at something just in self defense...
