Jaimee Grubbs, Tiger Woods and Michael Phelps' Bong Hit Connection

Is Bad Publicity the Kryptonite of Sports Legends and Their Sponsors?

Linking Jaimee Grubbs, Tiger Woods and Rachel Uchitel has been the media's pastime. But it is Jaimee Grubbs who delights in the attention of being named the golfer's "other woman." Will repercussions mimic those of the Michael Phelps bong hit story?

The Jaimee Grubbs-Tiger Woods Connection

A willing candidate for the claim to fame of being Tiger Woods' mistress, Jaimee Grubbs offers up voice mails and text messages as proof. Even the usually headstrong City Brights Blog is cautious about the actual veracity of the proof offered by Grubbs. Tiger Woods has made no comment about her, but then he has remained quiet altogether. It is unclear - other than the hope of notoriety and media spotlight - why Grubbs came forward, saved more than 300 text messages (assuming that they are real) and offers recordings to a celeb tabloid.

Tiger Woods Sponsors Standing By Him after Accident

CNN Money reports that Woods' key sponsors - Nike, Gillette and Gatorade - are standing by him in the wake of his car crash. The problem arises with the fact that this statement of support was made on 11-30. Should the Jaimee Grubbs-Tiger Woods related claims prove to be true, can the sponsors still stand by him? Noticeably absent in the show of support are AT&T, American Express and also Tag Heuer, Woods' other major sponsors.

Will Jaimee Grubbs be to Tiger Woods what the Bong Hit Story was to Michael Phelps?

The Michael Phelps bong hit story revealed that behind closed doors, negotiations with a tabloid failed to keep photos of pot smoking merman Michael Phelps from getting published. The gold medal winning swimming sensation suddenly found himself no longer being the media darling of the nation but instead was severely chastened for the negative image he portrayed for kids eager to follow in the young man's footsteps.

Michael Phelps, in addition to being reprimanded and publically humiliated, lost his sponsorship deal with Kellogg. The New York Times quoted the food giant as reasoning that the swimmer's behavior was incongruent with the company's intended image.

Is it only a matter of time before sponsors find that the Jaimee Grubbs-Tiger Woods association is contrary to the images they wish to portray in the minds of consumers?

I can't help wondering as well. I hope that the tapes turn out to be fake. In any case, if Woods public image turns out to be less than stellar (and if people care deeply about his private life, rather than his golf game) he could certainly lose endorsements. It is hard to figure out who is going to pop out next and what they'll say about him. Super update, Sylvia!
