Jalapeno Popper Filling Ideas

Amy Brantley
I have to admit that jalapeno poppers are one of my favorite foods. While I do enjoy the traditional cheddar and cream cheese filling, I also enjoy being creative. The truth is, you aren't limited by these traditional flavors. Here are just a few ideas to help you recreate this delicious appetizer.

Pimento Cheese

I have to admit that this isn't my idea. I was eating at a local restaurant and was served jalapeno poppers that were stuffed with pimento cheese and wrapped in bacon. They weren't deep fried, which makes them much easier to prepare. They also hadn't been seeded or ribbed, which made them extra spicy. If you want to really kick up this appetizer, make your pimento cheese from scratch.

Blue Cheese

I love blue cheese. The rich flavor pairs wonderfully with a variety of foods, but especially well with hot foods. There are a number of ways you could use blue cheese in jalapeno poppers. Whether you want to batter and fry the poppers with just cheese in the middle or wrap the peppers in strips of sirloin before baking, this is a delightful change from tradition.

Cheez Whiz

Okay, it may sound strange, but just think about how good Cheez Whiz is on a cheesesteak. This is definitely a filling that will have to be used for baked poppers. You could even make cheesesteak poppers by filling jalapeno halves with Cheez Whiz, grilled onions and mushrooms and diced steak. This would be the ultimate party food for the big game.

Sausage

One of the most popular appetizers in America is the classic sausage ball. If you want to add a bit of heat to this appetizer, shape the filling so that it fits into jalapeno halves and bake until cooked through. You could serve with ranch dressing for dipping or a yummy cheese sauce.

Don't settle for the norm. Look at your favorite recipes and see how you could change them up so that you create new favorites. Best of all, even if you use the traditional fillings, making jalapeno poppers from scratch will always be better than those found in the freezer section.
