Jamaica Golden Krust Restaurant Review

Jersey City, New Jersey Restaurant

T. H. Pankey
My first impression of Golden Krust restaurant in Jersey City, New Jersey is quite poor. Other than the company I was keeping and getting better acquainted with when invited to lunch, and the fact that it was food for me to satisfy my hunger, should I get invited again, if I were to begrudgingly accept, this time it would only be for the company.

The food isn't worth eating, unless I had nothing else to eat; the blaring radio isn't worth listening to ( most modern rap music is immoral to the hilt ); and the very snotty woman behind the counter would have the same attitude, were I to go again. I highly suspect it's whom she is as a person, and she wasn't just having a bad day. She was far too skilled at having a bad attitude toward anyone and everyone with whom she interacted, including making it her business to loud-mouth a woman in our group. And that's too bad, because Jamaica Golden Krust restaurant certainly had my attention for a quick minute.

Ja-makin' Me Want to Try Jamaican

When I asked a couple of friends of mine where they were going to lunch, they told me to a Jamaican restaurant. That really perked my ears, since the very friend that told me is from Jamaica. Right away I started imagining what exotic Caribbean food awaited me in this nice out-of-the-way restaurant to which we were going.

After walking a couple of short blocks through the bitter cold wind, while laughing back and forth over a few Ja-makin' ( Jamaican ) word play jokes, my gleeful anticipation was quickly tempered, when I looked up to see we were in front of a McDonalds-like franchise, called Jamaica Golden Krust.

That's OK, I thought to myself: I was going really to get know my friends better, and less for the food; but, how great the lunch was sounding only minutes earlier, when I was imagining getting to know them in a great little Jamaican restaurant.

Jamaican Golden Krust Food Quality

I didn't dwell on my disappointment that I would soon be eating in a franchise restaurant rather than an out-of-the-way Jamaican restaurant, and remained enthused about the Jamaican food I would soon be eating. So I asked my Jamaican friend what she suggested from the menu, and after an emphatic reply that "I eat almost anything" to her question, we narrowed the selection to the Curried Chicken Combination.

The plate of food I was served didn't look anything like the picture; and I don't mean a small difference. I was served a stewed chicken, but it wasn't the stewed chicken that was pictured at the restaurant either. I checked the website for Jamaica Golden Krust too, just before writing this review, and it also shows a picture of the Curried Chicken Combination and Stewed Chicken Combination, neither of which was what I was served at the Jamaica Golden Krust restaurant in Jersey City, New Jersey, at 2860 Kennedy Blvd.

Still, I trooped on, not wanting to complain and take away from, what had become, the only salvageable portion of the lunch: the opportunity to get to know my friends a little better.

By the way, if I were to grade the food I received from Jamaican Krust, with 0 conchs ( edible sea snails and shells in which they live ) the lowest score and 10 conchs the highest score, I would give it 1 conch; it was edible and satisfied my hunger. The cabbage and plantains were overcooked, and what was supposed to be curried chicken, marginally had an acceptable flavor to it.

Jamaica Golden Krust Atmosphere and Service

I lumped together both the atmosphere of the restaurant and the service at Jamaica Golden Krust, 2860 Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City, New Jersey, because both equally were poor. As mentioned earlier, the radio was blaring rap, complete with its immoral lyrics. The restaurant hardly had enough chairs to sit on, even though many more could have been provided, since half of the restaurant floor was empty. The décor left a lot to be desired, and as long as a Golden Krust employee doesn't disdainfully loud-mouth you or someone in your group, usually all of the aforementioned detractions from a nice atmosphere can be overcome.

The service was slow and very unfriendly, to say the least; and it all was because of one person, of the two, working at Jamaica Golden Krust. While the other person working was doing everything in his power to provide some semblance of service, the other person was doing everything she could to let anyone and everyone know she didn't like you, nor had any desire to serve you.

If I were to grade the atmosphere and service at Jamaica Golden Krust, 2860 Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City, New Jersey, with 0 bells the lowest score and 10 bells the highest score, I would give it 0 bells; and I don't do that often, if at all.

In response to Sallyb: If I were invited again, since I wouldn't go of my own choosing to Jamaica Golden Krust on Kennedy Blvd in Jersey City, I would certainly try and convince whomever was inviting me to go somewhere else. I have zero desire to go to that place again, and your suggestion and experience doesn't convince me to change my mind--thank you.

Even the name is a bit of a turnoff. "Krust" doesn't sound terribly appetizing!
