Jamati Online Highlights Top African Models

Top African Models Are Making a Difference Where They Are

Shirlene Alusa-Brown
Jamati Online is an African Entertainment Portal that highlights Africans in entertainment, fashion, music, design, and sports. They also have columnists who highlight anything of interest to Africans in the entertainment realm. The models are usually interested in developing philanthropies that help their countrymen, and have been largely successful at it.

The female models are somewhat better known than the males and include Kadiatu, a model originally from Sierra Leone, who is based in the UK; Andiswa Manxiwa from South Africa; Nnenna Agba, Nigerian, of America's Next Top Model Fame; and Agbani Darego, a Nigerian who was the first African Miss World (2001). Their professions and experience are as wide and varied as their look and they truly highlight some of the best the country has to offer. Cynthia Masasi, a video model from Tanzania, has opened a store in her country of Tanzania, in the town called Mwanza. Belinda, a model from Ghana, had a unique look and scar that kept her out of the modeling picture until she won the Miss Ghana Top Model in 1999 and that launched her into a lucrative career. Nnenna's participation in America's Next Top Model, helped launch her into the limelight and get her career started. Wonder if she still uses her Chemistry degree? Teiko Dornor, a plus-size model from Ghana, has shown that big is definitely beautiful. She carries herself with a grace and elegance borne of true confidence in herself. She has also inspired others to follow their dreams of being a model, and has a large following among males and females alike. Alek Wek is a recognizable figure as she moves her svelte figure down the runway. With smooth, dark skin, she has been the object of animated discussion as people debate about beauty. She has come out with a book that highlightsn her journey from Sudan into modeling.

The male models are working hard on being models and moving into other careers that complement what they do. David Nso from Cameroon shares how he left his pursuit of a medical degree to become a model. He doesn't regret it. Max Methi from South Africa is very popular and is called upon often by Men's Health to be the cover model. Digol Deng comes from war torn Sudan and is determined to make a difference for his country using his career as a launching point to shed light on Sudan. In his spare time he helps make a difference for Sudanese refugees in Georgia. Oris Erhuero is a model who acts and is involved in promoting and supporting up and coming models, actors and musicians.

All these models have an entrepreneurial spirit and are very positive and engaging. It is an honor to count them amongst the people from the continent and watch their rise to fame in a world that is not very welcoming toward colored models.
