Jamba Juice Fights McDonald's for Smoothie Customers

No Word from Slurpee

McDonald's recently added two new fruit smoothies to its McCafe line. The frosty beverages received plenty of attention thanks to aggressive advertising and media coverage of a canceled giveaway promo. Smoothie purveyor Jamba Juice is not letting McDonald's enter its beverage territory without a fight. A humorous ad campaign and coupon promotion mean customers may be the winners of this food feud.

Imitation is Not the Sincerest Form of Flattery
Jamba Juice released a fake commercial featuring the Cheeseburger Chill smoothie, a refreshing blend of ice and a whole cheeseburger. (View the Cheeseburger Chill commercial on YouTube.) The ad's website, CheeseburgerChill.com, redirects visitors to the Jamba Juice website and details "The Great Smoothie Showdown" promotion.

Use McDonald's Coupons at Jamba Juice
As part of "The Great Smoothie Showdown", residents of select cities can redeem McDonald's smoothie coupons at Jamba Juice restaurants through August 15. The offer is valid in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, New York, Chicago, Denver, Miami and the Twin Cites and includes the $1 internet printable (previously available on the McDonald's website) and free smoothie coupons from Parade magazine and McDonald's fountain drink cups.

Jamba Juice Smoothies versus McCafe Smoothies
Jamba Juice offers over thirty flavors while McCafe has only two. When comparing the online nutrition content of Jamba Juice's Strawberry Whirl and McDonald's Strawberry Banana Smoothie, there are some notable differences. Ounce per ounce, Jamba Juice's drink has less sodium, fewer calories and less sugar than McDonald's version. Despite containing significantly less protein, it contains a variety of vitamins and minerals.

McDonald's fast-food smoothies are completely different from Jamba Juice drinks. The two should be able to peacefully co-exist much like instant coffee and freshly ground coffee beans. But thinking about the Cheeseburger Chill ad makes me want to avoid both eateries and smoothies altogether. What's your take?

Yummy. I like both of them, but I do like real, fresh ingredients. Good job on this S.
