Arness also starred in several made for television Gunsmoke movies. His acting career was, however, not limited to Gunsmoke. James Arness also appeared in films, such as: The Farmer's Daughter (1947), Big Jim McLain (1952), Gun the Man Down (1956), as well as a host of others. He made a guest appearance on "The Red Skelton Show " and appeared in an episode of The Lone Ranger ; he also appeared in "How the West was Won" in the 1977 miniseries and again in the 1978 television series.
James Arness was big brother to Peter Graves (1926-2010) of "Mission: Impossible ". Arness had three children, sons Rolf and Craig. Craig who was adopted died at age 58. Jenny Lee Aurness, his daughter died in 1975 at the age of 25; she committed suicide.
James Arness is survived by his second wife, Janet Surtees and his son Rolf.

I remember him fondly as a TV giant 'real man' in the 1950's and 60's. The John Wayne (who was offered, I believe, the role first and declined it) of the small screen!
