James Cameron's Avatar in 3D: Not Just for Men

Leah Dempsy
I love watching movies; from comedy to drama, they all interest me. However, I have to admit, I was not at all that excited to go and spend $11 a ticket for a sci-fi, blue alien, what-is-this-movie-even-about flick. However, my husband convinced me this was the movie of the year and on top of that, we had to see it in 3D. So I get my popcorn, glasses, and wait for the show to begin. The lights dim and the movie starts. Right from the beginning, I am so intrigued and I feel as if there is no one else around me. This could be the greatest movie I have ever seen or even better, experienced.

In my opinion, this movie could be marketed more towards women. The trailers have the typical big machines, sci-fi, blow things up, male type vibe. They fail to show how Avatar is a classic love story where by the end you forget that the Avatars are any different than us. Now do not get me wrong, there is plenty of drama, fighting, and ego to go around, but it all has great meaning to the overall plot.

The movie is even more entertaining and intriguing due to the messages you leave with. First, love can conquer all no matter how hard it may be or what color your skin is. Second, we tend not to be open minded. Instead of trying to put ourselves in someone else's shoes, we expect them to fit just right for in ours. There are also messages in how we treat our environment. How we can so easily destroy it without even a second thought in our quest to make a small fortune.

This already great movie goes one step further with 3D, by transporting you onto their planet, feeling like you are running through blades of grass. If I would recommend seeing any movie in 3D, it would be Avatar. The graphics are phenomenal and the detail that went into making this movie, are truly out of this world. At the end you feel like you were part of an experience instead of just a viewer.

No matter what your views are or what your gender maybe, it cannot be denied this movie took a lot of thought. Overall, women will enjoy it just as much as men and you will leave the theater discussing the different meanings. And as you drop the glasses in the bin, you will be glad you spent the extra $2, to be a part of something bigger, than we could have ever imagined. I know I was.
