James Doohan Ashes Blasted Into Outer Space

Jimmy Smith
James Doohan the beloved engineer of the Enterprise from the hit TV series Star Trek, had his ashes flown into outer-space along with 200 other people at New Mexico's Spaceport America. Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the Star Trek series had his ashes also blasted into outer space in 1997. Doohan himself personally requested that his ashes be blasted into space prior to his death in 2005 from pneumonia. He was 85.

Doohan was the second member of the original Star Trek cast to die, DeForest Kelly, also known as Doctor McCoy died in 1999.

Doohan played in Mr.Scott in the original Star Trek series as well as 6 motion pictures. He was the ships engineer and the animosity between him and William Shatner fueled some of the most memorable lines ever in a T.V series. They reconciled though before Doohan's death in 2005. He was easily one of the most beloved characters on the show. It seems only right that his ashes are being sent out to the final frontier. More and more family members and people themselves are requesting extravagant send offs instead of the normal being buried in the ground thing.

Star Trek and Doohan's character Mr.Scott, along with the rest of the crew sparked the minds of people in the 60's with the extraordinary concept of intergalactic travel hundreds and hundreds of years in the future. The series along with Doohan gave the people inspiration to reach for the stars and that space travel to far away worlds would be possible one day. Star Trek was a revolutionary series, as it was the first of its kind, a television series in which the characters explored the universe in search of new worlds and civilizations. It also came at an age where man was first traveling to outer-space and orbiting the earth and of course there were the missions to moon.

As fans of Star Trek, we send out our final farewell to the Enterprise's good humored and more then capable engineer as well as the person James Doohan was himself. He will live on forever in out hearts and minds, immortalized in a T.V series and in the Star Trek movies as well as in other roles. He will be sorely missed by fans all over the world. Mr.Scott was sent off into the stars where he belongs, going where no man has gone before while the mission continues on.
