James Franco and Anne Hathaway Should Despise Each Other After 2011 Oscars

Jean Kelly
Hate is such a strong word. But, in the case of the 2011 Oscars hosts, I think such a strong word is perhaps appropriate. James Franco and Anne Hathaway have every reason to feel such an emotion towards one another, if the rumors are to be believed (usmagazine.com). The fact that the media has dubbed the 83rd Academy Awards as one of the most boring of all time is one very good justification for hatred amongst the co-hosts.

Another compelling argument is the fact that Anne seemed to carry the show. Had it not been for her (over) exuberance, the show could have easily done as well without anyone standing on the stage between awards. It was almost as if she was on something that she hadn't shared with James. The two were complete opposites. And, in many cases, James got his timing wrong, he wouldn't look at Anne during their dialogue, and he appeared to be completely indifferent to the task at hand. Anne has every right to "hate" her partner in crime now that it's over. James did nothing to make them look good.

On the other hand, James has rights of his own. He could easily despise Anne for showing him up. Yes, that's right. In contrast to Franco's wallflower behavior, Anne's bubbly persona overcompensated for the awkwardness brewing onstage. If James was trying to take a calm and collected approach to his hosting duties, he should have gotten in sync with Anne before the show aired. Instead, he was left looking like a deadbeat. It was hard to imagine that he could be nominated for an Oscar, if he couldn't even get through the night with some personality.

The one and only time that James gave me a good laugh was when he came out dressed like Marilyn Monroe. His comment about receiving a tweet from Charlie Sheen was priceless. But, the moment was fleeting, and in no time, the actor was back to his hum drum self. I have to say, I was never so disappointed in my life.

This awards season started with the offbeat character of Ricky Gervais, which was a bit much, in my opinion. And, now it has ended with a complete and utter snooze. I don't know if the networks got too much criticism after Gervais or what, but there has to be someone who can function down the middle. Not too inappropriate, and not too boring. Perhaps we should get a Briton to host next year. The English have a seemingly wonderful way of making everything sound fantastic, even when they're offending you.
