James K. Polk Historic Site in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina: Review
11th President of the United States
Pineville, NC 28134
United States of America
James Polk was born November 2, 1795 on a 150-acre farm in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. James Polk was the oldest of ten kids and his parents taught their children of patriotism, religion and to be involved in politics. When President Polk was 11 years old his family sold the family farm and moved to Tennessee. He attended the University of North Carolina and graduated in 1818. Upon graduation he moved back to Tennessee and opened a law practice.
Polk's vision for growing out west helped him win the Democratic presidential nomination over Martin Van Buren in 1844. President James K. Polk became the first underdog in United States politics when he was voted as the Democratic nominee for President and won the election.
The historic site itself is kind of hidden and might not be known about. There's a sign on Lancaster Highway close to Carolina Place Mall going toward Pineville that marks the James K. Polk site. You have to go out a road and about a half mile then you'll start to see the old log home as well as the visitor center. Most of the time the site is never crowded so you'll have most of the land to yourself to walk around and view things dedicated to the life of James K. Polk the 11th President of the United States.
