It's not often that an ordinary human being can rise up and become a hero, but hero he was. His intentions were to save his family and he put himself at great risk and ultimately died of exposure, not far from Black Bar Lodge, which was closed but stocked with food.
I've read a couple of threads on two different forums where James Kim was attacked for his choices, but what does that solve? A loving parent's innate nature is to provide for, nurture and protect their children. When Mr. Kim's daughters ran out of food and the mother resorted to nursing the four-year-old along with the baby, how could a man just sit there and do nothing, not knowing if help was on the way? Most men I know have that inherent quality of being a provider and protector. James Kim did what any courageous man would do and that is - he took action; he couldn't just sit there and watch his family suffer, he had to strive for survival and try he did! I even heard that the ground he covered was brutal and although having gone days without sustenance, and likely chilled through with increasing hypothermia, which would impact his ability to be coherent, possessed almost super human strength to cover the terrain that he did, with no supplies to assist him.
His intentions were honorable and courageous and while the outcome is heart wrenching, second guessing a man on a mission to save the wife and daughters he loved, is futile, and at a time like this, disrespectful.
And just this afternoon I read in the news that the road the Kim's were stranded on is normally closed for the winter but due to the actions of a vandal, the gate was left open.
This just proves that dire consequences can result from one incident, no matter how small or how great, and in this case a man lost his life and his family will have to go through life without him, only carrying with them the memory of his presence and the knowledge that he tried to save them.

Post a CommentJames Kim was a courageous individual, my heart goes out to his entire family. I hope they are doing okay during the holiday season.
He did the right thing, trying to save his family. They should find the vandals and nail them for opening the gate. None of this would have happened if the gate had been closed.
Good article Donna! This was a very sad story indeed.
Thanks for your post. I too have been quite affected by James Kim's story. What a selfless act! So sad for his beautiful family. I was looking at the website for their Doe boutique (www.doe-sf.com) - I think James Kim models the men's clothes on there. Their family photos are used to demo photograph frames. I felt just heartbroken when I saw those. I feel very badly that with all the media coverage, he has been berated, his actions have been overanalyzed and criticized by people all over who have never been in the same situation. In articles about other situations where people have been stuck for days, rescue only came after someone ventured out (Stolpas & family who got stuck in March for 17 days in the same area as the Kims). He did what had to be done, but paid for it with his life. I am sickened by CNN's article about all the warning signs and how they have chosen that route - the CNN people didn't have to do it at night in a blinding snowstorm. There are so many "if onl
Can anyone else say "Time Magazine Man of the Year" Wouldn't it be wonderful if this year Time Magazine recognized a genuine bona fide hero, a man who courage and passion for his family led him to extraordinary feats of almost superhuman effort, instead of just another politician or businessman who only inspires greed or phony patriotism?
How sad for this family. Most say stay in the car but how can you judge a man that wants to take care of his family and didn't know how long help would be.
