A poor child who lives in a crime ridden neighborhood, yet everyday they walk past drug dealers, prostitutes, and chalk outlines just to make it to school.
The single mother who works two or three minimum wage jobs just to make ends meet.
The 2.3 million grandparents around the country, who are suppose to be enjoying their retirement years, but be because of substance abuse, mental illness or neglect, they are now raising their children's children.
The teacher who stays after school on their own time, trying to help kids who have been shunned by society. This teacher sees potential in every student that walks through their door.
The politicians who had the foresight to vote against the Iraq war resolution right after 911.
The people who spoke out against the war when it wasn't politically correct to do so. These people went against their neighbors, co-workers and even some family members. Yet with courage and perseverance they continued to fight.
The policemen, firemen and rescuers, who risks their lives on a daily basis trying to save others. They don't ask what the victims race, religion or political afflation is before they enter a dangerous situation. They only ask "where are they located?"
People who enlist in the military, these are men and women who know they may not return home if sent to fight, yet they're willing to put their lives on the line. Regardless of how you feel about the war we must recognize the sacrifices that our troops and their families have made.
James Kim was a hero; he gave his life trying to save his family. According to reports he walked ten miles in blustery winter conditions seeking help for his stranded wife and two young daughters. Everyone who watched this tragic story unfold, must have put themselves in that situation and thought what would I do if that were my wife, my husband and my children?
Mr. Kim has shown us what a hero really is and how powerful love is. It was his love for his wife and children that made him leave what little shelter he had within that station wagon, it was his love for his wife and children that gave him the strength to walk as far as he did, without proper clothing that would have protected him from the harsh elements.
Yes, we have heroes among us, but because they don't wear costumes and have magical powers, some may not recognize them. If you look closely you'll see that they've been right within your sight all along.
