Spence Monroe married Elizabeth Jones
Six years later, James Monroe was born.
Five children lived thru their childhood,
Spence was a planter, also worked with wood.

For five years, Monroe studied at an academy
He excelled in Latin and mathematics.
He enrolled in a college at age sixteen
Patriotism soon overwhelmed the teens

Most dropped out for now they were men
Many, like Monroe, didn't go back again
The Continental Army, needed him more
His shoulder was wounded in the war

Holding a flag, in a painting, he's there
In Washington Crossing the Delaware
He never finished college with a degree
But studied law under president three.

The first wedding performed at the White House
Was his daughter, her cousin became her spouse.
The large plantation that he finally acquired
Destroyed by debts of a lavish lifestyle.
