James Taylor in Concert

A James Taylor concert encompasses various musical repertoires. Ranging from ballads to rock and roll, his concerts are a joy to attend. What is the nicest to experience is the fact that his acoustic set-up allows for his melodic voice to shine through. Here is my recap of a James Taylor concert.

James Taylor was a performer I was not a big fan of prior to seeing him in concert. Only after attending his concert, did I truly appreciate what a musical talent he is. I knew some of his songs were good, but I kind of thought they were humdrum. I was wrong…His performance on stage is memorable and very pleasant.

The venue was at an outdoor amphitheatre in Detroit, Michigan. The audience had brought lawn chairs and blankets to sit on. The hilly area surrounding the stage made for tiered seating. It was a festive garden party atmosphere.

The James Taylor concert started in daylight. As dusk approached, stage lighting became obvious. It was nothing fancy, just basic and sometimes colorful. In fact, there was nothing extravagant about the entire concert at all. It was a basic stage set. I believe it let his talent shine through. He had a backup band that supported him, not overshadow him. The entire ensemble all worked together in perfect harmony. It was a total joy to see and hear.

"Steamroller" was a blast to hear him sing. James Taylor's vocal acuity was impressive and provided many chuckles during this song. "You've Got A Friend" was a crowd favorite - obviously. I particularly liked it since it was my graduating class's theme song.

The most memorable song of the James Taylor concert was his performance of "Fire and Rain." In fact, it was done so hauntingly beautifully that my eyes teared up. The audience had all joined in the sing-a-long. You could hear the venue simply resonating and echoing with everyone singing in unison. It was quiet, comforting, and powerful all at the same time. I will remember that for as long as I live.

Another nice thing about a James Taylor concert is seeing his obvious joy in witnessing the enjoyment his music brings to his audience. His passion for sharing his music shines through. His face lights up, his eyes twinkle, and he has a genuine smile. His personality shines through throughout his continuous audience banter. James Taylor came across as having a very pleasant persona.

The concert last two hours and was well worth the admission cost.
